after reading soooo!!!! many complaints about jd 100 series lawn mowers i felt compelled to write about my 94 model lx 178 with 927hrs. original deck, motor(kawasaki liquid cooled v twin), and tuff torq k61 hydro. this has been a very dependable,strong,excellent cutting tuff lawn mower!!!!! can't find any faults with what it was designed to do--cut grass-- not tow,till,move dirt ect.
i think the problem with jd is that they decided to try to be competitive with mtd and other lower priced mowers and to do that they had to sacrifice quality, dependabiliy and longivity along with the jd reputation of building good stuff. sad but true they only hurt themselves and the company good name in the process.
