John Deere rider deck always cloging up with caked material

If you have a place to handle the mess that is washed out, it may be a good system. But still doesn't help keep the deck dry.

The new high-lift blade set is now on order with a new drive belt. Have already drilled and tapped the deck and installed the water hose connection. Chipped out another 10-15 lbs of cake from under the deck. Think I'll sandblast while waiting for the parts and give it a good paint job, make the deck a little slicker. Yes Beenthere, it's going to make a mess while cleaning it out, but in the heat out here in Nevada, that water will be all gone in under a hour, cement slab where it was washed should hose off quickly.

As a side note on this, I use a plastic scraper on the underside of the deck to remove things when they build up, and that keep scrapes to the metal at a minimum to eliminate even more reasons for buildup to occur, but then when I clean it up, I spray Motorkote on the underside to keep stuff from sticking to the underside. Doesn't stop the deck from ever building up caked on material, but it sure takes a lot longer to do so.

It's probably because you h ab en to water your grass so often so the moisture in the grass makes to clippings stick.

I noticed some caking effect on my Deere 62" decks (x4). What funny, when I used use farm king rear mount mowers (x2) I had no such problems. I always wondered how a huge company like deere couldn't figure out what farm king did. Could be also the fact both my fk mowers were rear discharge.

None of my Deere mower decks have been a problem with clogging up. Might be when and what is being mowed. ;)

I hear what your saying but my mowers all mow the same crappy (lol) grass I have. I don't have any reason to mow wet as I live in the prairies. The clogging isn't to the point that it is problematic but more of an observation of the accumulation at the end of the season. I try and clean my stuff and ready it for the next season.

I mowed my 2.5 acre "field" last weekend. It was about 98 degrees and dry, and I waited until about 5:00 pm to start, so it was the driest part of the day. It had not rained for over a week, so moisture was not an issue. The field is some bermuda and some johnson grass and weeds.

Even in those conditions, my deck caked up underneath.

I'm just resigned to the necessity of removing the deck and cleaning and re-installing it after every mowing.

Sounds like you've got a poopdeck, Pappy.

This poor thread has gone round robin twice with the same posts being made over since page two..

There is some surface tension going on here, I'm talking physics,, not people... Some of the later consumer decks are suffering from high levels of this tension..

Out of 4 cutting machines I own,, only one is suffering from this issue,,, It's a deere GT245.. It cuts smooth as silk, but I notice the clippings are fine and small... Over cut so to speak... My other machines cut it and spit out larger clippings... I.e. I cut 2 inches off,,, the clippings are 2 inches long...

As you might expect, these machines do not clog.. My over cutting 245 does so because of triple or quad triple cutting releasing inherent moisture and small particle clippings causing a pancake batter situation, thus the caking and clogging...

There is no repair for this designed condition... I don't believe in anything deere, but you gotta give the kids credit,, the new decks do try to cut grass,, too good...

I feel sorry for those that have to remove their deck,,, I don't do that... I just jack it up and puddly knife every second mowing or so on a sheet metal drip pan slid underneath,, then throw the chewing tobacco mixture out in the woods or on places I don't want anything to grow..

I have thought about a 2 part epoxy coating under the deck, and I'm also a fan of por-15 products... Each to their own,, it won't solve the problem, but might help reduce clean up frequency, and labor in doing so..

I'm working in Mexico right now helping deere and some other off brands with some of their manufacturing "contracting" issues... I'll assure you right now,,, deere doesn't know about the problem,, and they don't know how to know about the problem, and they will never know what to do about it...

They are playing the "hang on" game like our other American last call companies...

I'm there,, I'm looking,, that's what I see...
