My Father In-Law Just Purchased A JD X720SE With 62" Mower ($10,500 Out The Door). Anyone Found A Way To Disable The Reverse Switch On X700 Tractors? (Shuts Off Mower When You Back-Up) We So Far Can't Find The Switch. It Has Back-Up Lights, Will We Lose Them When We Disable This Function? Please help If You Know, Thank You.

you might want to read the WHOLE manual before you start disconnecting "stuff"

From the Manual for your X720SE
NOTE: Backing up while mower is engaged is strongly discouraged. The Reverse Implement Option should be used only when operating another attachment or when operator deems it necessary to reposition machine with mower engaged.

1. Stop machine forward travel with attachment engaged.

2. Look behind machine to be sure there are no bystanders.

NOTE: If attachment stops while repositioning machine, return PTO/RIO switch to off position. Begin again with Step 2 in procedure.

MX22575, MX13557

3. Lift and hold PTO/RIO switch (A) up past the PTO engagement position to activate the reverse implement option while depressing reverse travel pedal slightly. Instrument panel PTO indicator light (B) will blink when RIO is engaged.

4. As machine begins to move backward, release PTO/RIO switch and reposition machine. Instrument panel PTO indicator light will stop blinking when switch is released.

The two most common approaches is to find the RIO wire on the PTO switch (the one that is activated when lifting up) and figure out a way to keep it live when the PTO is on - just make sure you don't disable the other PTO safeties. The other way is to find the switch down in the reverse linkage that only comes into contact when you press the reverse pedal.

JD might have changed some things but do enough checking and you'll figure it out......in any event if you do alter anything make sure you make it reversable if you ever sell the tractor.

The X series is pretty simple, once you trace the linkage back to where the switch is activated when you press the reverse pedal. You won't lose any other functions if you just affect this one switch. Whoever deactivates the switch, takes the responsibility that no one is going to get backed over with a running mower deck. I think it is remote, but it is amazing to me the number of people I see mowing their lawn or yard with children and others in the mowing area. Or two people mowing with push mowers side by each. With all the debris that can be picked up and thrown, I find it /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

There is a news story on the web about a father who backed his riding mower over his child and amputated a leg over the weekend. SUPPOSEDLY this happened out west this weekend. If you want to discuss disarming safety devices, I'd suggest you take the discussion off line so no liability to the provider of a discussion group is created. Just my $.05 worth, don't flame me but do you talking off line.

That happened here in Oregon last week sometime. The girl in question was 2 years old, and her dad didn't see her behind him.

First of all let me say after looking at that picture how could anybody not love the X series-awesome machine. Wish your Father in Law the best of luck with it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
As far as backing up while mowing whether one pulls up on the switch or disables it you still need to look behind you. When I had the X I found that it was still easy to pull the switch and not look behind me as it is now that I have the 2210 and it doesn't have the interlock. What I'm saying is that either way requires a conscious effort to be positively safe.

Skootter,
I just disabled the safety on my X304, probably a similar switch on your father-in-law's machine. Look under the dash at the back of the PTO switch. There is a connector that snaps to the switch that has 6 wires. On mine, the bottom two wires are for the RIO. All you need to do is confirm that you have the correct wires, and make a jumper to connect them. I know others have warned you already, but make sure there aren't any young grandchildren in harm's way.
Nice machine, by the way.

""If you want to discuss disarming safety devices..........take it offline""

Discussing it and 'recommending' it are two different things. I think discussing it on the forum among members is great, and the place to do it.
Personally I disconnect mine, but don't do it for others. I leave that decision to them, as well as figuring out how to do it. I think the person doing the 'deed' is the one who is responsible, not the media where it was discussed. But I don't know everything either. Taking the discussion off line leaves a lot of people out of the loop who are interested or who can learn more about their equipment.
Not 'flaming' you, as your input is worthy of consideration in the discussion.

I think ones attention is drawn away from watching behind just from the mere fact that one has to reach for the switch to keep the mower operating when going in reverse. That is the precise moment one needs to be looking behind for clearance. So the 'safety' plan is thwarted by the device, IMO.

Now, I need to go out and mow. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I can see your point, BUT, on a MB for bike riders some people were discussing how to get around motor vehicle registration rules. Unfortumately for all concerned, there were some California Secretary of State employees who also ride and read. They were able to go after the people who were dumb enough to post with information as to where they live and ride. The MB moderator got wind of what was going on and has requested that all such discussions go off line. Just my $.05 worth.
