Johnny Bucket or the Superior Scoop?

I got a Johnny Bucket for landscape work and a JD 54" plow for the snow and some dirt moving. Both are great attachments for my X585. Would highly recommend the JBucket!

Hello Gorbie,

This seems the norm for the "power user". They buy both pieces and use them as required. The JB seems like a sturdy piece of equipment. And the Company behind it (and the Owner) is first class. And I have yet read one bad review of the JB Sr for the X series.

The "float" setting issue has me (alittle) concerned. I have read this in two separate threads. One owner actually installed a spring (must be in tension to pull back on the blade) to keep the blade floating.

How big of an issue has it been for you?

I have a new X585 with a 47" snowblower. Will I have any issues with the "float problem"? I assume I will need to place the hydraulics in float when using the blower. I have a paved driveway.

Also, I was looking at getting a JBSr. for yard work. Is it effected by the float issue? OR is it just the blade?

Thanks

JJE64,

You may not have a problem with float on the blower if it has a slotted attachment for the up/down cylinder. Does that make sense?

Joe,

Sort of makes sense for me except I have yet to use my new blade.

Are you saying the front hitch lift cylinder rod will continue (under pressure) to expand causing the front end to lift? Thus a slotted rod end would allow the rod to extend yet not push against the pin and thus the hitch, ie no down force?

Exactly Brian.

I ran several tests measuring down pressure, hydraulic pressure at ports, etc. The X585 has this problem while others like my 318 have very little down pressure. The X585 puts equal high pressure on both sides of the cylinder when in float. Because of that, one side of the cylinder has much more PSI because there is a larger surface on the piston that does not have the rod attached. The 318 appears to have equal pressure also, but it is not seeing the supply pressure I guess. At full throttle the X585 will take the squat out of the front tires when in float! With the engine off, I had about 102 lbs of weight resting on the floor. At full throttle in float I had about 220 lbs! Hope this all makes sense. I love my 585, but am very disappointed that Deere can't help me.

Joe,

No I am sorry. I guess I am dense. When you write "it has a slotted attachment for the up/down cylinder", do you mean the rod that comes out of the cylinder is slotted? I will attempt to look at the hitch tonight. My X585 is about a month old, but based on serial numbers it looks like a 2004 model year unit. Does that make a difference? Also, will this effect JBSr. operation?

Maybe I should have bought a 2210 /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

JJE64,

Don't panic, The extra 120 lbs can be resolved with Joe's design. Appears to be a very easy fix.

120lbs = 220 (in float) - 100 (dead wt, engine off)

A strong spring with an initial pull of 20 lbs to overcome the unstretch tension will work fine.

JJE64,
No you are not dense .... Actually I am!
The snow thrower or the snow blower both mount on the same front Quick Hitch that the blade uses. I was thinking of my 318 which I believe has it's own lift cylinder. Sorry for the left curve.

I am sure that the float issue will affect any attachment connecting to the front Quick Hitch.

Hope this doesn't further confuss the question.

Have a great weekend guys,

Joe

JJE64,

If you find that you do not have the float issue with your new X585, please let us know. I have not heard of a fix from Deere that would make me happy, but it could happen.

Thanks,

Joe
