The backhoe should be powered through the "Power Beyond" hydraulic system. This uses the tractor's transmission / hydraulic system. You check the tractor's hydraulic oil which includes the transmission. There should be a yellow cap at the left, rear of the tractor in back of the seat. You check the oil cold, with the tractor off. Unscrew the cap and there should be a dipstick attached to it.

You may need to add some Hy-Guard hydraulic oil to the tractor after you use the backhoe as the cylinders might not be full and will be filled completely when you use the implement for the first time. The best thing to do would be to put the backhoe on the tractor, extend and retract all of the hydraulic cylinders associated with the backhoe, turn the tractor off, and then check the oil.

I would add that there are two types of Hy-Guard sold. Check your tractor's manual. My JD 4600 specifies the "Low Viscosity" type, which is the JD20D spec, if I remember correctly. This stuff is expensive, but I have always used it in my tractor. There are stories of people having problems with their hydrostatic tranny from using the wrong juice in it.
