is there any trick to keeping the joystick boot base connected?

Mine stays in place just fine. Is it seated on all 4 edges ???
Maybe you could try a small dab of silicone adhesive caulk here and there to 'weld' it to the plastic shroud. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I noticed if I keep the boot pushed down on the joystick shaft it allows a lot more flex and is less likely to pull away from the base.

I did what Jim recommended but I also found that if I rotated my boot 90 degrees is stayed put in the base (not sure why however). I also routed the wire from the rabbit/turtle switch under the boot to keep it out of the way. I was careful to give it enough slack under the boot so that it did not get caught in the mechanism. I have checked it on a regular basis and so far all is well. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Common sense would look to put the cables inboard. I would hazard to guess that the vast majority of us have the wiring routed through the plastic cover...then up the boot.
I'm going to the lumberyard ( next to the NH dealer ). I'll check out the units in the yard...just for giggles. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You'll get no argument from me on that statement. However, at the time of my purchase all the TC-40Ds that I looked at sold by different dealerships did have the control wire routed on the outside of the boot which made no sense to me.

Here's a link to my original No Joy Joystick post back in 2001. Notice that my cable was routed up through the boot instead of on the outside. I bet NH changed the routing when they changed the style of joystick shaft although I don't have a clue why they would do that? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
