1953 Ford Jubilee
New to this but had a question, I have a '53 Jubilee that when under power in 1st gear, a loud clunk sounded. It came from the rt. side in the tranny or differential area, I dont know much about fords since we grew up with Int. but is there an "easy" thing to check, or am I looking at a rebuild?
Thanks.

ok.. a loud sound cme out.. then what.

doing anything differently?

still driving?

making any clunks.. or slips in wheel rotation.. like teeth are missing fromt he ring gear.. or.. or?

still making sounds or one time deal?

lug nuts all tight? hub nut and hubs tight on axles?

I realized I didnt say that after I posted... it made one clunk and then nothing, like a shear pin or a bolt snapped, not like teeth on a gear breaking off. there is no gears forward or reverse.
Thanks

ok.. that tidbit was much needed info.

next test.. does the pto still work?

if no, then the clutch hub could have sheared. ( doesn't have an aux tranny ahead of the main tranny.. like a sherman or hupp does it.. it could have popped out of gear or detonated.. the aux trannies fit in place of a regular input shaft. ).

if pto works.. clutch is good.

next to check is the splined coupler tube between the tranny and the pinion gear. it is hollow and can shear. inspection port on center section will let you see the tube.

next to check is the rivits holding the ring gear on.. they can shear.. replacement is a bolt set.

next to check is a sheared axle... since it is an open diffy, a sheared axle will prevent the tractor from moving as that sheared axle portion will spin.

do some looking and post back.

Thank you very much. Will go out to the barn and check things out.

post back.

ps.. rear diffy fill with a flashlight and a mirror on a stick will help see the ring gear area..

tube will require a center to trans split to repair.. ring ger bolts / rivits will require an axle trumpet to come off.

clutch hub will be an engine to trans split..

hopefully it is one of those and not a shaft in the tranny.. which would be rare...

when you find out what it is.. let me know.. depending on what was damaged.. I may know of some good used parts.. like the tube.. etc..

Soundguy,
First thing is thank you!
Did some checking, PTO works fine, Took the rear differential fill plug out couldnt really see anything so I thought what the hay...why not put it in gear? I can see all the gears moving except the axle, like maybe it is the spider gear between the pinion and axle.
Just whnt out and looked again... in conjunction with my shop manual the pinion side axle side gear is turning but the wheel side axle gear is not. So it looks like I only have to pull a trumpet insted of split the tractor.
Thanks
