July 4th Fireworks, Horses and their Owners

Hi
Every year when people start blowing up their money It bothers our horse, it wouldn't be so bad if it was just one evening but they waste their money on fireworks for at least 3 weeks around the 4th of july. Just never understood why people like to hear the noise and waste their money like that. I keep hopping every year they will outlaw fireworks in our county.

I don't own any horses, but the ones across the road to the west, at the big horse ranch/boarding and exercise stables (large track), don't seem to be too bothered by them.

Of course, I shoot 9mm handguns at least once a week on my place (Yes, I was here first.) so I guess they have become rather underwhelmed with the noise.

Do what one poster said, move them into an open area.

Ours go from the front to the back - less noise, more open space.

Better for me too - I don't worry as much.

Hope I don't keep the neighbors up too late. Oh, be sure and turn up the volume.

I didn't see the reaction of the horses next door, but Allie didn't care for the other next door neighbor's fireworks tonight. She's normally not allowed up on the furniture (except our bed), but look where she ended up when the fireworks started... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

No horses at my house, but I let the dog out to do her business, when I went back to get her inside she was laying down under the bushes. She came inside, grabbed one of her stuffed animals and spent most of the night on my bed.

Fireworks here started at dusk, but didn't end until about midnight. Neighbors to the north put on an annual aireal show with LARGE, almost park quality, fireworks. They must spend $1000 a year? Their kids have been working at a fireworks stand every summer for as long as I can remember and in Indiana you can buy pretty much ANYTHING with a fuse.

For the first time the neighbors to the south had a party on the 4th, they also had a lot of fireworks, but ended much earlier than the neighbors to the north. But for a while it was almost like living in a war zone between two batteries of cannons.

We don't have horses but they are in 2 pastures next to our place. I didn't see them get too stirred up. Our dogs on the other hand ....... they barked all evening and night. They couldn't see anything because we don't have neighbours that close but we could hear the fireworks and they hate anything that sounds like a gunshot.

On the other hand, it was Independence Day and people are supposed to celebrate. Hey, I'm originally British and if I can celebrate getting an [censored] whoopin', surely some others can be a little bit more tolerant. Maybe I just like to party but remember, childhood memories are made of such things.

My only problem with it is that down here in Texas, sometimes the pasture grass is so dry that there is a real fire hazard with fireworks. Some small towns, like ours, actually have an ordinance against individuals setting off fireworks. They organise a community fireworks display instead but out in the country where we live, pretty much anything goes. I did hear one last night that sounded like a howitzer. The people standing close to that one must still have ringing in their ears, not to mention a few broken windows.

Neither the horses nor the dog had any reaction whatsoever to the fireworks.
