Jump start tractor with truck?

Since the mid 1960's I've jumped started many,many diesel tractors with a gasoline pickup. I've even jumped off tractors with 24 volt systems utilizing 2 gasoline pickup's.

Sure you can. Hook up to the truck first. Then the positive to the post on the starter if accessible and the ground last to any convenient good metal surface, preferably a bracket mounted on the engine itself. You can use the tractor battery itself if that is more convenient.

And no, it was not because they were idiots. One of them actually was a very talented millwright.
His grandson was seated on the tractor, he connected the cable to the starter and the tractor ran over him.
If you think you above making a mistake like he did; fine.
But do you think it wise to give this advice out to every Tom, Dick and Harry that reads this forum?

Unless you short across the solenoid you are no more likely to have the starter engage than if you hook it up to the battery. OTOH you should never hook up your cables unless the vehicle to be boosted is in Neutral or park, with the brake set.
Also, that's another reason to hook up to the dead battery first.

The starter has a continuous hot wire going to it. Just don’t short across to the starter solenoid. And the op has a hst tractor. Unless he puts a brick on the pedal and turns the key on first it’s not going anywhere. And anything built in the last 30 years won’t start without the ignition being on even if you do short the starter it won’t start.

Perhaps this is a starter for a new topic, but I wasn't aware you could pull start a tractor with a hydrostatic transmission or even tow it for that matter without disengaging the HST somehow.

Yet another benefit of having a gear transmission. Not meaning to start a fire, just had to get one more whack on that dead horse!

Well if it was conveniently parked with the loader up and the rear implement up and it’s parked in a convenient location for pulling and your wheels are parked in the direction you want to go and you have a second operator and you have a second capable vehicle and chain then you’re set. I think jumper cables or a battery charger would be a lot easier.

I have no idea how you could get killed connecting a cable to the starter, unless the contacts in the starter solenoid were welded shut. I'm guessing what you are thinking of is shorting the solenoid to the battery cable on the starter to start the tractor and the tractor was in gear.

After a search there is no consensus as to the correct way, other than always make the last ground connection away from the battery.
Learned the way I do it from my Dad (auto mechanic for 20 years and then full time farmer) and I'm sure he learned it from his Dad who
was also a mechanic and also had the John Deere dealership. And yes, I've seen both of them jump across the solenoid to start a tractor
from the ground, after making sure the tractor was in neutral. I don't do that.
We had a copper strap attached to the battery cable at the tractor starter on a couple of tractors to making jumping easier when it was really cold
and livestock had to be fed. Good thing we didn't know the gas pickup wouldn't be able to jump the tractor!

boy what a hoot this is, - there are lots of factors around jump starting just like putting gas in your car or siphoning some fuel from a garden hose, if you dont have the sense to do it you probably should leave it to the experts or supposed experts - the arts/crafts/knowledge passed down over the years are worthy of much and common sense and logic plays a big part. It is perfectly safe to jump start with a screwdriver across a solenoid, or a pair of pliers but sometimes the arch will mess up the pliers at the joint from the arc. Did it ever occur that it might get hot too? wear gloves and something over your eyes? And dont drain the sediment bowl and let gas run all down the tractor before making sparks, do we really need to say that stuff here?

MOST jumper cables are NOT heavy enough to jump straight across and start most things, you need to let a battery charge a bit and rev the motor up on the supply vehicle to pump juice into the dead one provided its not shorted internally or just plain defective then nothing will jump around it.

We had some HEAVY cables in our arsenal that would jump anything we owned with 0 gauge cable so this made it easier to jump start big heavy diesel tractors, we still have them!!!!

If you choose to jump start and stand in front of a tractor tire when reaching up and turning the key - that is a logical choice that involves other things to consider, we all make mistakes and learn so sad some have died in the process. I'm not saying its good to practice but its fine and safe if you do it right. Just dont do it if you dont know all the risks would be my opinion, and that is all it is an opinion. I have burned my hands, had stuff in my eyes, jumped on moving tractors, and luckily my guardian angel is better at protecting me than i am at killing myself. Lord knows i have had plenty of opportunity. That is what this place is for, ask and hopefully we can provide sound advice from our mistakes or knowledge. Just be careful and its perfectly safe.
