Jump Starting Question...The picture I promised

If it still starts slow when jumping directly to the starter, it's definitely a bad starter. I would remove it, test with jumper cables, and if you are a Mr. Fixit type, disassemble and try and find the problem, dirt, rust, siezed bearing, bad brushes, etc. or take it to a rebuilder.

Maybe there is a short in the windings of the starter. Fewer windings give less force for the same current and therefore a slower turn.

Ah Ha...I have started the tractor!! I pulled it close enough to hook up to a 225 Amp charger/jumper and then I could hear the starter buzz but not engage... I struck it one time while turning the key...(not an easy feat) and boom...it cranked like a new John Deere.....(for good reson I suppose)
I then proceeded to start it about 10 times without any difficulty whatsoever....So..in my relatively amateur opinion, the starter was the culprit. Now my dilemna is whether or not to wait until it happens again or have it rebuilt. The tractor sat a lot in the past 5 years according to the last owner so I am thinking that some regular use might solve the stiff bendix...How about you guys??? Fix it or wait and see???

You should be able to start it with your truck battery -- I have been jump starting my Kubota M8950 with my Chevy pickup.

I find that I need to jiggle the jumper clamps to get a good connection, and usually have to let the truck run about 5 minutes or so before giving it a go.

I need to run to the Kubota dealer to get a new battery for my tractor -- it just won't hold a charge any longer.

I'll bet a whole 2 Yen on the solonoid. The one in a 240 is sequential, first it indexes the Bendix gear, and then it closes the switch to the starter itself.
Did I mention I've had this problem?
Yours will work for a while, and then let you down again.

To quote Dirty Harry, "Do you feel lucky. Well do ya?"

The starter will work for a while, perhaps even long enough that you almost forget the problem you had with it. Then, bang, it will quit working at a location that you can't get to with any other vehicle, no electricity either, you're stuck. Have to call a tow truck with a very long winch cable to drag the tractor out of where it's sitting. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'd fix the starter, now. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Jump Starting Question..

Good Advice....went out this morning (before church) just to see what would happen. Notta...just a bump to the solenoid and then an eerie silence. I think I owe Franz two yen...(How many John Deer' will that get ya??? Thanks for the good advice, I am going to try a NAPA solenoid as suggested earlier in the post. Great Dirty Harry Quote!
