I heard over the weekend that Monday, 10 June '19, plus the days leading up to and after, would be an excellent time to see Jupiter and up to 4 of its moons using just a pair of binoculars. Especially if you can view from a rural environment = less light pollution.

Well, it's true! I looked last night (it's Winter down here, sunset around 1645) through a wee bit of high haze and could spot two of the moons. [Celestron OutlandX 8x42 binoculars]

Tonight it was clear and I could definitely discern three of the moons.

Just another one of the benefits of 'living rural'. :star:

Thanks Randy. I've seen Jupiter and some of its moons with a homemade telescope about 65 years ago, but it is still interesting to see and hear about the wonders of the universe. Sailors are suppose to know all about that stuff.....unless you are a submariner.
Cheers,
Mike

So many Sailors (myself included), standing a night lookout watch at sea, will report a twinkling 'contact' on the horizon. Of course, it's a star or planet. I think it's a 'right of passage'.

[I did a stint on an Oberon Class submarine... 6 months = not for me. :)]

Just set up my 28x110 binoculars and tripod to view tonight. Thanks for the reminder, I have a strange addiction for viewing Jupiter and it's moons.

I have a small dobsonian and may pull it out tonight and have a look, will now have to look up the coordinates.

How long is it expected to be visible? Seems like it always rains or at least overcast when there's a celestial event.

Thanks for the reminder. I live very rural and it's supposed to be clear skies.
