I dont see it Nearly as much as I used too; but 15 years ago; with many companies, it was standard practice to lube/fuel everything 1st thing, and start anything you would use before lunch, and just let it idle, even if it would be a couple hours before you ran the roller or whatever. It wasn't at all unusual or even frowned on, to leave a loader or whatever running, while the guys sat in a truck to eat lunch. That's where a Lot of hours came from, pure idle time.
Company did send out an email about carbon pounds from excessive idle in cars/trucks, and how if we where sitting more than 5 minutes, we should turn the vehicle off; but then the strobes drain the battery, the power inverter for computer drains, it, ect. Normally, if I'm within a 100 ft or so of the work vehicle, I leave it run, unless I know I'll be out for 30 mins or more. No one ever looks at passenger vehicle hours vs miles.
I would have more respect for that email if it said "You F'ers are burning $50,000/month in idle gas" rather then 5#/vehicle of emissions carbon.... or whatever
