Just arrived and hour meter is broken

I found out there's a lot of guys here I wouldn't buy a tractor from... :D
Perhaps another lesson would be, don't buy a machine without looking it over. If an hour meter is important to you, make sure it's working before buying. In many cases, it won't be. Most people who are used to dealing with older equipment know this. Hopefully this discussion will help those who are not as experienced.

Absolving the dealer of culpability. Still baffling.

I agree with the OP. If a dealer is going to claim a number of hours on a piece of equipment, they should confirm that the meter works. I've seen plenty of private adds that disclose the fact that the meter doesn't work. I bought my Walker mower for several thousand dollars "sight unseen" only pictures including the meter picture and claim in the add. I drove from Illinois to Ohio to pick it up at a dealer and if the meter wasn't working when I got there it would have been an issue for me.

I've been in the forum for a couple years and I've noticed some things over time. Had this dealer been any other color than orange or green and this thread would be a dealer trash fest by the same posters who are absolving the dealer now. You would even have them on your side, pushing forward to take legal action or something alike.

We don’t even know that the dealer is orange. Dealers will trade any color in the used lot.

It's a kubota dealer. I put that in there about 90 posts ago, probably got lost in the fray.

The dealer had no culpability if they did NOT know the meter did not work. I doubt they had a legal responsibity to verify its operation. From their apparrent wiilingness to fairly resolve the issue I suspect they did NOT know.

Perhaps they should have checked if it was working. Perhaps the buyer could have asked if it was working. Culpability is a two way street.

If I were going to make that drive and a working hour meter was that important, likely it would be a good question to ask beforehand.

The thing that makes the hour meter important to me is the claim of a number of hours on the equipment. When I talked to the dealer on the phone, I didn't specifically ask whether the meter was working. I believe it was implied by making the claim of hours on the mower.
