The other day my steel supplier referred me to an old boy way out in the country as maybe a source that could do me good. I was looking for someone to break me some three sixteenth's plate.

My bud warned me that I should had oughta be careful. "James is a little like you" was the way he put it.

It's literally one of those "turn left at the Exxon and then left again just in front of the red barn. About a bit the road will look like it's going to go right through a white house, veer to the right and follow that until the road ends. Go left aways and the first house on your left, go to the back to the shop."

I'm just about the perfect combination of country and city. Folks more citified than me are out of balance. The same can be said for those more country than what I consider comfortable. But it still took three phone calls to get to the shop. Twice James answered. The man has one of those unlimited patience with fools voices. The other time the phone was answered by a lady who sounded like she had chicken frying and a pie cooling on the window sill.

You know today it seems most folks most places are caught all up in the "sense of urgency" syndrome. If you don't have that edge that broadcasts you're about over it, the edge, then you really don't have the sense of urgency that's required to do the job.

It's refreshing to visit with someone like James and the voice quite feminine and wonderful on the phone. I think they're in a place where "sense of urgency" would choke of it's own free will.

"We're late risers" he told me when I called to see when it would be a good time to drop in and talk. "But we're usually around the shop until it almost gets dark most evenings."

I asked what late rising was. He explained that it usually meant after eight thirty in the morning.

I rolled up to the shop and was in awe. I mean absolutely both feet flat on the floorboard so's I wouldn't fall off the seat flabbergasted. Acres and acres of good stuff like steel, tractors in various states of dis and dat repair, trucks likewise, and more doggone projects in stages of completion. It was what I'd have if given the chance to create heaven.

We started talking about making things and probably the closest thing to what was going on would be if two sailers started talking about the ladies in ports around the world. Him being the senior sailer of course.

Probably one of the more interesting aspects of the conversation was all the similarity in projects. He pointed out a truck he'd done this and that too. It was like deja vu all over again repeatedly and often, been there, done that, just not near as well as he had, but I'd tried.

He led me over to a bay in the shop to show me his trailer he'd been working on for a couple of years or more. He'd been done a long time ago but work and committments do get in the way.

What had started him leading me over was my question about a stack of half inch diamond plate aluminum. I had to ask what that was for and why. Just so's you know why he led me to the trailer. "It's for the deck" he said. " All I really got left is to paint it and then put all the aluminum on it."

After I'd asked and commented on just about every facet of the trailer I looked at him and asked the big question, "why?"

"Well, to load equipment like tractors etc that are not running sometimes" he said.

I shook my head and told him he was wrong. "There's only one reason why you've made that trailer" I told him.

"Because you could."

That's probably the best reason to make anything in my book.

If you were to make the ultimate trailer you'd want the tail board to be hydraulic, sorta like this.

And of course it wouldn't be the ultimate trailer if the bed didn't tilt a bit and have a nine thousand pound winch, right?

It wouldn't be the ultimate trailer if the particulars weren't all in a nice neat compartment for easy access and maintenance, right?

Yup, he's older'n dirt. He's seventy six, just last month even.

Think about it.

How would you like to be seventy six, only have a slight hitch in the get along, and still be capable of not only having a dream but the wherewithall to make it come true?

I'm going to be posting more of the stuff at his place. The man is an absolute treasure of ideas and experience.

Norte tejasanos can PM me and I'll send them his address and phone number. He's reasonable and talented. If they think Six Flags is boring they need to spend some quality time with James somewhere between Tom Bean and Whiteright.

Harv, I think you ought to become a writer. I enjoy the mental picture from your words about as much as I enjoy the pictures you post.

Man am I in trouble or what?

James is sixty nine as of last month. I can't explain why I said seventy six unless it was because James has that calm demeanor that reminds me so much of my father who just turned seventy seven.

I am sorry for the error.

I'm sure there are tbn members that know James and this post will get back to him. I do hope he has a sense of humor!!!!

Thanks Mark. I will try to get some pictures of James' own furniture making just for you.

I could build a trailer like that too, if I had the steel, a welder, a shop to build it in, more time, ... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well tbn'rs I called James today and prepped him for becoming an internet hero. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I asked him if he knew anyone who had access to the internet. Son of a buck has a dry sense of humor. "Not anyone I know that'd own up to it" was his reply.

I'm going by the steel supply house to get the materials for the loft. On the way to the job I'm dropping by James' and picking up four pallets of file cabinets of sorts. I'll take more pictures and give him a print out of this thread. If he wants to see the pictures he'll have to go to an internet cafe. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'll have some pictures hopefully tomorrow evening of the place where ninety nine percent of the tbn'rs would die to visit. That other one percent we'll own up to if we must. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

markie61 -- I agree about Harv's writings. I have his Profile marked as a favorite and each time I check the TBN, I check what he has posted first. In addition, Harv gave me the URL for his monthly magazine articles and I read them as soon as the magazine is posted.

I am a Computer Science Professor (mostly retired) and I am constantly quoting Harv's Professionalism and work ethics articles to my students. He does a far better job of putting thing in words than anyone I know.

Leo you're too kind. But I will buy you dinner. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I stopped by James' this morning.

This is the obligatory guard goose. We had us a discussion. I told him the camera was a shotgun. I think he believed me. I'll be I would have gotten mad if I'd been able to understand half the names he called me.

Notice behind the goose at all the parts, truck parts, tractor parts, parts parts.

This is a Ford pickemup.

James made the bed, all aluminum. It started off with a 460 on propane. Then it was powered by a Nissan diesel. He said that was a nightmare to get the gear ratios straight, umpteen rearend--tranny combinations. Then came a Ford six cylinder on gas and now it's got a 460 on gas.

I didn't ask about the mileage, I'm sure there is a ton.

If you look in the background under the trees, there's some of them old Farmalls. That was the first tractor I drove, B model. Instinctively gave it full throttle and dropped the clutch, what a ride, what a butt chewing, and my dad loved me!
