Brian and Rob-D,

Your posts are very timely as I own a 4100 I purchased in 1999. I am considering updating to the new 2000 series (sounds like the 2720 is the way to go). I have an in-law that expressed an interest in purchasing my 4100. It has 950 hours, has been maintained religiously and is in good shape. I am not entirely sure what attachments I presently own that would be compatible wit the new tractor. I assume my FEL and MMM would not be compatible and should be included with the sale of the tractor as a package. (actually, the 電rive-over style MMM on the new 2000 series appears to be very slick and a motivating factor for the new purchase). I suspect my quick attach snow blade may not work wit the new 2000.

I would be interested in opinions as to what would be a fair price for the following items.

1. 1999 JD 4100, 950 hours
2. FEL/Bucket and ballast box
3. 60 MMM
4. Quick-Attach front snow blade

Thanks.

Forgot to mention that my 4100 has optional rear hydraulics and optional rear ROPS work light.

Hi Red,

If you are going to eventually get a Backhoe then I would think twice about the MMM deck. You have to remove the front support mount arms to get it on. At $2800.00 for the deck plus another couple of hundred if you want the hydro lift package you're getting close to a decent zero turn. That's why I went with a Woods 5' rotary mower for $1350.00 (I got the slip clutch model, the shear pin costs a little less) to do the rough stuff and I'll be getting a zero turn for the grounds. If you're doing large fields without many obstacles then maybe think about a PTO finish mower.(I think Woods gets about $2300.00 and if it's like my Rotary Mower it's built well)

Check Deere, they say the BH is not compatable with the MMM. The BH is a big deal for me, I'd say it is in use 30% of the time and well worth the expense. Switching back and forth with the MMM deck all summer, even though it only takes an hour or so, isn't worth it in my eyes.

Best,
Rob

Rob,
Good suggestion. I will be meeting with Deere dealer #2 today. Deere No dealer #1 was not aware of the 2720 model.
Although I don't own a backhoe presently, I am giving serious consideration to including that with the purchase should I upgrade. As I mow grass fairly often, having to remove the backhoe everytime could be very annoying. I like your idea of simply considering a dedicated "mowing" machine (zero turn would be ideal). I don't believe my property is well suited for a rear mounted finish mower.
Thanks again for the good heads-up!

Move to Maine and you'll have plenty of reasons to use it especially during winter :D

karl,
I live in the Western Catskill mountains about 2,000 feet up. With a 600+ foot driveway the blower goes all winter most years.

I got my tractor the other day( 2720), and didn't have much to do...I filled my weight box 3/4 of a mile from my house with sand. When I drove the tractor I have to say I don't really feel the difference in power from my 4100. I live in a hilly area and going up hills there might have been a slight power difference (better with 2720), but not much. I used the front end loader and I really can say it dosn't feel like it would do a whole lot more than my 4100 The Hydralics seemed a litter quicker but not much. I guess I'm glad I got the 2720 but I dont really need it. I have not tryed mowing with it yet, but plan on it next weekend!, I will let you know how that goes! I really dont use teh PTOs and thats probably where you really see the power gain! I might get a snowblower for it,,,,but that will be in a couple of years or so! What it comes down to is I wish I never sold my 4100. For the basic homeowner an 18hp tractor would be quite adequate. I wouldn't spend the money for more power, you won't appreciate it, and won't use it! In two years my tractor will be paid for, and I wont mind having the bigger tractor. (although I cant tell the difference) I guess my point is If you are a homeowner that needs a tractor for plowing, mowing, mulch, light loader work (or heavy you will be surprised what than can do!) dont spend the extra money on a 2720...buy a 2305 or i think its a 2320....you will never need any more power than that!
