Just bought my first tractor....

Hello,
What a great website. I found it by doing research on the Kubota 7100 that I just purchased. I'm sure I'll be asking plenty of questions as this old 7100 is going to need some TLC (and transmission work!) do bring her back to good working order. So whomever reads or responds to my questions, please be patient. I'll do my best to keep questions to a minimum. I'll take pictures and post them here as I go through the restoration/repair work.

The 7100D I purchased was an ebay deal for $1500.00. The engine runs fairly well, but there appears to be plenty of other "issues" to deal with, the most serious appears to be a transmission/PTO gear knock in low range PTO, low range 1st gear, and also high range 4th gear. I believe that it's the same gear causing the "knock" in all three positions and I'm pretty certain that it is a chipped tooth(s) on one of the gears. I also have sticky brakes, worn tires, a right rear hub thats wobbles around on the axle, sticky throttle controls, rusted decompression cable, electrical wire disconnected and a clutch that just about throws me off the tractor! The list goes on and on and on... What could be more fun? It always seems like I go for these old restoration projects instead of just going out and buying a new one. At any rate I ordered a service manual and a parts manual and will get started here in the coming weeks. Any advice on restoring this great old tractor will be appreciated. I thought I would start with the transmission/rear end rebuild then move forward through the tractor correcting problems as I go along. Should be fun, at least I hope so....

Hello there Woodburner,
Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. There are plenty of good folks here who have plenty of knowledge about Kubotas, so I would say not to keep your questions to a minimum. Guys here love questions and they are generous with their answers to keep you in the right direction. I have limited knowledge on rebuilding or repairing Kubotas because 1) I bought all of mine new., and 2) the darn things won't break. You'll be happy with it when it's done. I'd like to get into a project like that, but overtime and my family kind of keeps hobbies to a minimum for now. Keep everyone posted on your progress.

How many hours on the old girl? I had a 1994 7100hst and it was a work horse. Something to check on the hubs( only issue I ever had with mine) would be the large pinch bolt should be torqued to 109lb/ft. If after this there is still some wobble, check the spring that's under the bolt( there was one on mine anyway!) and see if it's coil binding. I had to trim that spring down a little and retorque..... no more wobble!!

Take your time and take a lot of pictures as you take it apart. They will help you put it back together if there is a question as to how something is supposed to fit.

I have a B6100, very similar but slightly smaller engine. I had a wheel wobble only to find out it was loose lug nuts. As for the decompression cable, mine has been fozen for years, I rarely use it and when I need to I just reach in with my hand and squeeze the lever on the engine. BTW, when posting it's good to put the model # of the tractor in the subject line. That catches the eye of people that know the model. Good luck, these are strong little tractors.

Just thought I'd follow up to my post on my new, used B7100. I split the tractor and dis-assembled the transmission to find the source of the noise. Boy was I suprised! It's a wonder the tractor continued to move! There are gears with missing teeth, most bearings are worn or completely burned. Some of the needle bearings had even melted and welded themselves to the input of the #1 shaft. The PTO shaft (shaft 3) was broken in two pieces near the front of the shaft. It's amazing that the PTO continued to spin. At any rate I put together a parts list and am currently getting prices on the parts to put the transmission back in good order. I'll post again when I find out the financial damage...

Ouch, that's alot of damage. Makes you wonder what the previous owner did to create it all.

Well, maybe my priorities are different, but the the most important first repair would be to replace the seat.
Then, I'd get a canopy.
All that other stuff is just cosmetic.

Welcome to TBN! You must be a wrencher since you have just jumped into the tractor and taken it all apart! I'd recommend starting a new thread with some title such as " completely rebuilding Kubota 7100D, ideas needed"

This way, as previously said, you are most likely to get replies from people with actual experience.
