I had a 1974 2030 JD with no ROPS for 10 years. I was always conscious of that fact when I operated it and went very slow on even a slight slope. That said, I now have a JD CUT with ROPS and it is essential for this smaller, narrower tractor. The larger, older tractor seemed far more stable on any slope than this 3038e.

As others have said, if you don't plan a lot of work on slopes, I wouldn't make the big investment in ROPS. The Farm Bureau in Virginia will pay a part of your ROPS cost, but the hit is still pretty big for a part time farm type like me.

Here is a photo of him on it last year. Got the tractor a brush hog and rear blade for 3k. My question is should I install a ROPS to the old machine and where would you recommend I get it?
Oh it's a 1972 JD 820 diesel made in Germany.

Dang you! I would love to have had that tractor. You lucky dog. $3000 is an absolute steal. Good luck and keep us posted with pictures. Yes, I would get a ROPS.

You don't need a hill of any kind to roll it. Get the ROPS.

I got a John Deere ROPS for my 1020 (1965) about 9 years ago for $550.

I'd get it

Does/would a current ROPS decrease its value as a classic/parade machine? I woukd think so, but I don't know

That's a good question. I would think though it could be removed as easy as it goes on..?

It's been a long time since I sold NEW 830's but I think the ROPS was a dealer added option. I don't remember picking any up at the Gulf of Mexico port in Houston that had an installed ROPS. The ROPS aren't difficult to install if one has means to lift and balance it while bolts are inserted.

We had a neighbor just down the street in Louisiana get badly injured when his tractor turned over. Even on fairly flat land, it happens. I'd get the ROPS. If you have to go in and out of a standard doorway or garage, try to get a non folding ROPS that'll fit underneath. The one on my 4010 did so, but your tractor is taller. May not be able to get a non folding ROPS for it. I keep the ROPS folded on my 1025 because it won't fit inside my garage unless I fold it. It's still above my head on the tractor seat. Don't know why JD made a folding ROPS for the 1025 because it isn't any higher than the 4010 with non folding ROPS.
