last weekend my cheap HF 14" cut off saw died on me. I was pushing it little bit too hard and it just stopped working.

So - to be able to keep working on my project - I got a tool I was thinking about for years - Milwaukee Sawzall. Wow, that's something! It runs and cuts like "abused" ape if you get my point. I am very impressed with it, wished I got it long time ago.

And this morning, I decided to take a closer look at the cut off - if I can replace just the motor or what can be salvaged from it. Well, long story short - the winding looked fine, I took out brushes and put them back (kinda Microsoft fix:)) and it works now.

Got quite lucky i quess - wonder what strike of a bad luck is coming now:)

You think a Sawzall is fun, you should try a port-a-band. It's another one of those tools that make you say "how the heck did I manage all these years without this tool?"

CSOG, You have the best of both worlds now. The Milwaukee Sawzall is a fine unit, but heavy as ****. You can use the HF unit to take with you and the MSA for a home based mount unit. I have the Milwaukee Sawzall and a jepson. The jepson is much easier to move around.

Sometimes I feel ike Robinson Crusoe :)

Found some new carbid motor brushes, but they were bigger than the HF saw needs - so I filed them down and it runs much better now.:D

One of the reasons the HF saw is so cheap - the brushes are only 1/2"x1/4" in profile and they look very low quality too.

Ive learned there are a couple tools that no one should be without. they should be given to every male (and some females) child when they turn 12. A recipricating saw is one of them. I have a Dewalt but its still worth its weight in gold. I dont think it weighs as much as the Milwaukee though. Another power tool that has been good to me is my Makita compound slide mitre saw. Im also fond of my Hi Lift jack and of course my tractor.

You left out the chain saw... they should be standard equipment with every tractor.

i'm missing the sawzall and the compound mitre (both on my "need" list);

Don't forget a nice multi-tool like a leatherman or at least a good pocket knife.

Gees, and to think, I was thinking the good "fix all" tool is the 8 pound, short handle, mini-sledge in my tool belt. :eek:
