The dip stick variations are, I think, caused because air bubbles from the previous run are trapped in the dip stick tube and push out fluid. Once you pull the stick the fluid rises to its proper level and shows once you insert and extract the stick. Make sense?

How to tell where the fluid is on the dipstick:

I just pull the dipstick and gently lay it on a piece of cloth (my pants) or leather (my glove) or paper towel.

I had the same problem with seeing the oil level on the shiny dipstick. So I cleaned the dipstick, took it to the kitchen, turned on a propane burner, and gently heated that end of the dipstick until the steel was blued for a distance of a few inches. Let it cool normally. Now the oil level shows up well. Have no idea why Kubota - and many other manufacturers - don't do that simple chore for us.
