IT seems like it will do good for me, 410 FEL, 52" mmm, gear drive.

First question is on the mid-pto that runs the mower, if I get in really tall grass and want to stop the ground speed to let the mower clear, the pto is not "live" and as soon as the clutch is pushed it stops the mower ----are the newer 4110's the same way?

Does some one know what would be a good way to make a weight that could be picked up be the three point hitch (like a concrete block (maybe 30'X30") or whatever with pins to attach directly to the three point and where to get the pins to make this.

Last (for now) when wanting to change ground speed is it better to change numeric gears and stay in the same hi-low range or change range and leave the numeric gear the same?

I am sure I will have more questions but thanks for any input on these for now
Dan

Welcome to TBN. Please fill out your profile, it will enable members from your area to assist you with certain kinds of info. A simple counterweight set up could be made from 3pt carrier( available from TSC or Farm King in my area for app$80) and add weight as needed to it. I use mine to carry a 55gal drum on a pallett to water my new trees.

I've got a 4110 hydro. Looks like yours is a gear. I'll try to help a bit.

Ya might want to double check your measurements on the 52" mmm I don't think they make a 52.

JD calls the gear PTO a "live PTO"

As you explained, the gear models have a "live PTO" which stops when the clutch is pushed in... the hydro has an "independent PTO" that is turned on/off by a push/pull switch.
Stopping to clear the mower on a gear model is a tuff one... I'd say your only options are to raise the mower and make 2 passes or take less of a bite and mow with 1/2 or 3/4 of the deck in the "taller" grass.

Unless your fairly handy I'd recommend buying JD's 3pt. ballast box.... i don't think it's 30x30... but full of concrete it's close to 800lbs. The box cost about $185.00 and is I-match compatible.

On my hydro... going from L to H just about doubles the ground speed... I don't think gear/range shifting makes any diff. as far a which one is better (whatever better is?) Ya need to match your speed to the task at hand. On the Hydro... I think the manual states that high range is for light duty task (mowing, hauling, transporting, etc..) and low range is for heavy duty task (tilling, mowing tall grass, heavy hauling, etc...)

About the only way to keep the mower turning to clear grass with a PTO like that is to pop the shifter into neutral. Then let it clear and put it back into gear.

the 4110 gear is a trans driven pto same as your's,as you say the pto stops with the tractor. a live pto has two stage clutch and is not affected by travel other than you must stop to engage pto on 2nd stage of clutch, independant pto can be engaged at any time regarless of travel. The best thing you can do is mow higher on first pass and go over it lower on a second pass.

I have the gear and I do enjoy it....The Hydro has some real good advantages but it sounds like you found a great deal on a sligtly used machines like myself. For FEL work and mowing you should be using the Low Range and the speed range of 1-4 depending on needs. I do not use it for mowing, but I can see the gear having a steady speed for open fields, kind of like a cruse crontrol. I find the Live PTO is somewhat handy on the Rear PTO when I use my PHD. I can feather the clutch at Idle so I dont slam the PTO and PHD and break a shear bolt.
The HST models are more convenient no doubt, but the gear units are great regardless and the machine has plenty of power (more than you think)..I have a 61" bucket and I have filled it with wet soil or 3/4 rocks without it complaining...my calculations have the weight load capacity higher than the spec's, and my machine has not been modified. Maybe its consersativley rated?
You will find the 4100-4115 (Yanmar built) as the most reliable trouble free CUT's around, and they hold there value and are in high demand

Good luck with the machine...its a blast regardless

Seems to me you could make a box out of plywood, drill holes in the center of two sides and pass a pipe (the same diameter as the draft pins) through the holes so it sticks out a couple inches on each side. You could then drill holes in the pipe for the pins, unless you are using a quick hitch... then you could just put on some caps. Finally fill the box with concerete. It would be cheap, easy to make and you could make it whatever size you want.

Live PTO works very well. Just push in the clutch half way to stop the tractor and keep the PTO going. That is enough to clear the grass when if it starts to bog down in my experience.

I think that you will find that the gears go (in ground speed order) from 1L to 1H to 2L to 2H........ I don't worry about low or high or what gear. I just put it at what gives me the ground speed I want for what I am doing.

As far as the counter weight goes, look for a company called TSC (Tractor Supply Company) They have the pins you want, along with your local dealer at a higher cost. I would make it. Not too hard.
