Mine does the same thing if it's run hard and shut down.

Makes you wonder how the muffler stays together :)

If you do kill the ignition at idle, just flip the throttle up at the same time. Like fordlords says, it will throw enough air thru the engine to lean out & dipserse the fuel. No Ka-POW! Most of the time I just kill it at full engine speed. Click- Burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... silence... It's an aweful feeling, but that's the way it is.

That's the recommended procedure. My 3235 manual says to put the throttle between MIS and FAST before turning off the key.

You may have to idle longer than 60 seconds to cool the exhaust, its just way easier to idle for 20 seconds until its running smooth and blip the throttle and shut it down. Problem solved forever.

Thanks for the info.. we do notice 1 problem ... we were told when your done mowing to let the cub idle for 1 to 2 minnutes as this prevents backfiring when you shut it off...........well.................. we followed our dealers suggestion............and it still "after runs" so I try to just let it run longer and it still does it.............any suggestions...
otherwise this seems to be a great machine.........:D
I speed it up some then shut it off.

I had the same "pop" after stopping until I tried 3/4 throttle which solved the problem. I think the manual suggests 3/4 for stopping and 1/2 throttle for starts.

One of my first cars was this POS little turd Dodge Rampage pickup-car that had the infamous, "dieseling," at shutoff. Kind of the same concept here but instead of the fuel getting ignited and popping in the muffler as on these Cubs, the Rampage's cylinders would be so hot after running that the incoming fuel was ignited by the cylinder heat only causing the engine to run on or "diesel," when the ignition was cut, sometimes for 5-10 seconds or more. The answer was the same though- if I gunned up the throttle at shutdown, it would stop without the dieseling. Needless to say I had major trouble picking up the babes in high school with my high output Rampage :(
