Just how do you BUY AMERICAN?

Shane this is getting weird, you are from canada right?

But to me the big three auto makers and the rest of the country are two different issues, things or whatever. And to me the country would be just fine if one or two of them closed up shop, this is not a welfare state,[well not yet],I slightly feel anybodys pain if they lose their job,but thats life, thats why education and training will get you through, skills, you can take your skills and go on someplace else, many[most] factory jobs don't travel well.

Feel the same about the housing market deal that they have been ranting about, our house is paid for,no body helped us do it. And if we couldn't have and the bank took it back, wouldn't blame nobody but myself. Course, like I said,I'm an independant kinda guy.

But I'll change my mind on all these bailouts if they give me 30,000 or so of other peoples tax money,to keep me bailed out. Thats what I meant by greed, thats just the way we are.

Like i said before 7,000,000 okay i will say it again 7,000,000 are affected by the auto industry.

These people fuel the economy we buy things like tv,cars, houses etc i know you are going to say well so do i But my friend you are but 1 person if 7,000,000 are out of work who will be buying these items in such large numbers?

Our plant alone gives the government[fed] over $86million dollars in taxes every year.

I know every body should have skills like you [i don't think you said what your trade is]. but the fact is, if it wasn't for the 7 mill out there we would not be able to afford you.

Where do you live?

And yes i live in Canada which is one dip shy of being American.

[QUOTE=CinderSchnauzer;

"What if next time I really want to buy a Canadian made car - well may Toyota made in Kitchener / Woodstock, maybe Honda made in Alliston, maybe Suzuki made in Ingersoll."

This a great misnomer those vehicles are "ASSEMBLED" there.

85% of the content of the vehicle is from overseas.

Please don't believe these vehicles are Canadian.

Have jobs been lost yes, i was 1 of them with the closing of the truck plant in 04.
One of the highest profit plant and highest quality plants out there.

But i didn't turn around and start supporting overseas.

Shane, you may be right about that 7 mil figure but I doubt it my self, just the big three just in the usa?no way,I ain't really worried about canada,or france or etc..
By skills I mean doctor, nurse, teacher, welder, carpenter, brick mason, mechanic, etc,if you have spent the time and sweat to get those skills, you can make it,its never the end of the world or the usa's economy if where you work at lays you off.
Most[not all],but most jobs in these assembly line type factories just don't require you to have the skill to do this.
So,I can see where somebody who works at one of these type jobs, really feels bad terrible deperate, when they may lose that job, where else are they going to get a 30 plus dollar an hour job plus insurance plus retirement, plus all the perks that go with being in the auto workers union, well for a few that have got skills, they will make it just fine,,for most, they will have to step down to the real world the rest of us live in.

I agree with you.

But why would anybody want to let jobs just go away?

Obviously the governments feel the auto industry is important or there would be no loan.

Would it make you feel better if i made less then you? I have encounter a few people with jobs you need an education for, resent me because i make more that them? I guess that is human nature.

Speaking of education there are alot of people doing jobs that are not in there field but they have a piece of paper that says they are qualified to do just about anything.
Alot of good people have been bypassed because they didn't have that paper, and the funny thing the people without the paper can probably to the job better.

The big 3 are not the enemy! i bet the co. overseas are laughing though, they can bring cars here but they will not accept our cars. hummmm

%60 of the vehicles from overseas are still shipped here and not built here.[CAN and US]

My point was whatever the content, the local Toyota / Honda / Suzuki product is a lot more "Canadian" than the Big 3 product from Mexico or the Big 3 product coming from the US. As someone else commented the "3" have also asked for a Canadian bailout with one hand while closing factories with the other and moving production to the US.

I've been buying GM for years and probably will until they fold. Unfortunately, based on the current trend it would provide more direct support and employment to friends and neighbours to buy the Toyota.

... and to make matters worse for the laid-off unionized auto worker, don't bother to apply for a job at your friendly neighborhood non-unionized Asian car maker. They avoid hiring anyone who has a history of union affiliation.

I received a gift recently from one of my Indian outsourcing colleagues in Bangalore. It was a statue of the Hindu religious deity Ganesha. He's the pot-bellied fellow with the head of an elephant. My wife pointed out to me that underneath, there was a "Made in China" sticker on it. I guess we aren't the only ones wondering "Is there anything that ISN'T made in China?"

ah yes... do some looking at tractors and you'll find the same thing.

I looked before I bought. The JD 3320 seems to be pretty much from offshore - at least I didn't find any "Made in China" stampings on any of the castings. The MMM and BH are labeled "Made in USA" and the FEL was "Made in Canada" shortly before they decided to close the Welland plant and move production to the US.
