I used to do a lot of solo hiking always stepping as quietly as I could in order to observe whatever wildlife. One day when I got under a stand of small fur trees all of a sudden all heck broke loose.I can imagine how that would spook you. Turkeys are not known for their stealth and silence. I get a small band coming into my yard quite frequently. All the flapping, squawking and horse play. For sure - you know they are here.
However - they hit the pine trees when they need to sleep. A ground sleeping turkey could easily become coyote food.
A half a dozen or so flock of turkey's exploded out of the trees! About gave me a heart attack!
