Bought a new house on 4.5 hilly acres (partially wooded) last fall and am going to need a new lawn & garden tractor before the spring mowing season starts. Internet search led me to this site and I signed up with the hopes of getting some knowledgable help deciding which brand & model might best meet my needs.

I'll be mowing about 1.75 acres.

Looking at Kubota & JD brands...dealers for both brands are reasonably close.

More specific questions to follow.

Welcome to TBN.

I have a JD LX277 lawnmower and it has been great. I am sure both JD and Kubota will have a model to fit your need . I don't know much about the smaller JD line but the Kubota BX or B models should work for you. I have a Kubota L3130 that has been trouble free for 600+ hours.

Do you plan to use it for things other than Lawn and garden?

What part of NC are you located?

Surry County.

Mainly mowing, general yard work and the periodic wooded area cleanup.

I'm going to put in an elaborate Koi pond this summer (a hobby) but I'll probably just have the general outline dug commercially rather than buying a backhoe for the tractor. I just don't think I'd use the backhoe enough to make it cost effective.

I've kind of zeroed in on the Kubota BX1860 as about right for my needs but I'm hoping to get some feedback from actual users...specifically the mowing aspects. I'd like to hear about quality of cut, how sharp it will turn when mowing around trees and flower beds, whether the 4WD is prone to tearing up the turf during turning, stuff like that.

Also wondering if anyone can recommend a good-quality fertilizer/lime/grass seed spreader which would fit on the Cat 1 hitch.

If you are considering a used machine, you can't beat a JD 425 all wheel steer, big deck and a good platform for the horsepower

Just got a 1860 myself. Love it, it's leveled out a little more than an acre for me and I'm about ready to start the grass. It's not full time 4WD so not a big worry. I have the R4s and they leave a mark but I've got the FEL and boxblade on it. If you go with the turff tires and take the extra stuff off you'll be fine. Turns a little better than a 4-wheeler.

You need to start a new thread in the Kubota forum on the BX with the questions you listed above. You will get a lot more feedback on the BX in the Kubota forum.
