Congrats,JD,on your impending geezerliness. Hope you enjoy your retirement. I'm only 58 but have been on SS disability since '09. Bone marrow cancer. No retirement,no money, but plenty of time for gardening, lawn maintenance, hunting, fishing and grandchildren. Stay busy and God bless you and your family.

Congrats. I am with you on getting paid as early as possible. I have an uninformed question --- can you also get Medicare at 62 or do you need to wait until 65 (or older)?

It's 65 for Medicare that's the good news. The bad news is Medicare will go bankrupt somewhere between 2016 and 2024 depending on who is spinning the numbers.

JDgreen227 congrats on becoming an official geezer ... man now you're goin' to be rollin' in the dough. :moneybag:

Congratulations! I hope you enjoy your retirement.

PS; How old do you need to be before graduating from "geezer" to "Old Fart"? ;)

Filed for Social Security benefits online two hours ago, I will hit the mark of 62 years old in 3 months. The positive side of things is, I don't FEEL anywhere near that age most mornings.

Did one final recalculation of collecting benefits at age 62 versus my full retirement age of 66, and I can collect an additional $427 per month if I wait four more years. The downside of waiting the additional 48 months is that I can collect enough benefits from ages 62 to 66 that it would take me until the age of 78 to catch up if I wait for my full retirement age to collect...since most males in my family history never make it to 70, it was a no-brainer.

One more thing...according to my earnings statement from SS, at the rate of my proposed benefit payout to begin in September, it will take me less than 3 1/4 years to "earn back" everything I paid into SS over a 36 year period...no wonder the system is having financial problems.

I did the online thing last fall prior to turning 62 in November. Got my first check in February, left my job March 1st. The only actual visit to the local SS office was just to inquire into how much I would recieve when I happened to be in that area one day.

Beyond my former employer wanting more and more and not willing to pay accordingly, my wife is not well so I have my hands full at home. I started painting our house to get it on the market so we can move closer to her doctors and the hospital. Of course, that is taking me longer to do than I had originally thought. I don't know how I had time to actually go work my outside job, lol!

I was just thinking today though on how good I feel these days even though the only days I am taking it easy are when I have to run the wife somewhere. Else, I am painting, mowing grass, doing barn chores.

I admit, money is a little tight but we are adjusting. When it comes down to it, money will always be a bit tight but time to live is even tighter.

Lucky guys! 62 young, add 12 more for me (74) and today I visited with my mom who is 96 and still living alone.
Dad made it to 86 and on wife's side her mom and dad made it to upper 80's and her uncle to 102.
We have 4 generations here.
On the plus side Canada has gov't insurance so we are well taken care of.
Hope my tractor makes it.

You "geezers" made this country and world great. I really think the 50's, 60's and even the seventies had moments that layed the foundation for future generations in this country to excel.

Congrats to you all, try and sit back and enjoy your lives for a while. Keep speaking up though!

The who's who of TBN looks to be a core of "geezer"dom. :)
