Today I stopped at the truck stop to get a pop. Gas $3.69 & diesel $4.08. Pop, any size up to 44oz is just $.89. Its the cheapest per gallon. Lol

That jives close (enough) with my experience vs that of the O/P
I haul a long head_to_head goose neck horse trailer and have been getting 14.6 MPG over a 36,000 mile average on a 2003 Duramax.
I mention that it is a horse trailer to indicate that I "MIGHT" be driving a bit gentler than if I was hauling the same weight of lumber.
I make good time, barely minutes behind the cars with riders when going from the barn to a horse show.
Maybe not, I have the DIC (driver information center) and my Scan gauge II displaying INST ECON at all times, so I am PAINFULLY AWARE of what happens when I step on it hard.
I would LIKE to be a feather foot, but don't think I'm anywhere near that (-:
These are not all long hauls, many are to local horse shows, some are for single horse trips to a local vet or large animal hospital, some fuel goes to maneuvering around horse show parking fields and of course waiting in line to get out when the day ends.
It is worse in winter due to the lower energy fuel and of course the fuel is more expensive in winter since it is from the same base stock as heating oil.
The average over 36,000 includes all that, plus all the cold starts, etc.

Back to same driver, same conditions, same load, same everything else, but for gas vs diesel - but IMO the biggest variable IS the driver.
Not so much WHAT you drive, more HOW you drive it.

Years (decades) ago I could do the conversion between liters per 100 Km and MPG in my head.
Divide either one into some constant to get the other (two hundred and eighty or so ?) I forgot, someone here knows, anyone could work it out.
It was useful for reading European car and motorcycle magazines.
