Chip,

So if I understand correctly, when operating the FEL, the hydraulic fuild does not go through the strainer on returning?

The reason I ask is I'm installing a filter on the return line where it enters the strainer, left side. (There was a rubber 90 there that was cracked)

Skip that last post i made. after looking the hydraulic system over more closely, I think I understand it beter now. while draing the system, I thought I'd install a spin off lenz hydraulic filter. I saw 3RRL modification where he removed the strainer housing and tapped a 1 in thread. Then he Tee'd the Rear remote return with it. It is all on the suction side.

Looking the tractor over today I think the best place for the fiter is on the rubber joint on the 1' suction line about 2 feet before the pump. It does run low along the engine but I'd plan on turning the filter horizontal to keep it out of the way.

Anyone see an issue with that? Is there a certain distance a fiter should be placed before the pump?

The issue I see with that is that a filter should be on the return to tank line, not the suction line. On a suction line to the pump you can only have a coarse strainer (like 80-mesh) or you risk causing cavitation in the pump from starvation. On the return side, however, you can go down to about a 10 micron or so filter safely and get far better filtering.

Yup, and the KM454 already has one. Unlike the one inside the Jinma sump, KAMA/TaiShan put it on the outside. The photo is of Paddy's tractor, the backside of the suction screen housing is visible inside the orange circle. Remove those two bolts, the suction screen comes out (along with all the fluid in the sump). The suction screen consists of a magnetic center cylinder that is wrapped inside 80x80 brass mesh

I agree, I would never put a filter on the suctions side. RETURN side only. A stainer is ok on the suction side but not filter. You are just asking for troubles.
