How do you check level and add rear axle fluid. Under the rear axle are 3 drain plugs ( one in the middle is a little larger ) Is there a dip stick or fill plug there somewhere?

Also what fluid should be used . . . 90 wt. gear lube or ?

Thanks for any help

The fill is near the shifter, there is a dipstick. the outer drains on rear axle should be drained and refilled to a bit below the vent (or it might leak out on steep hills) Use a gear oil with MT-1 spec 80-90 weight. MT-1 will protect any "yellow" metals. Other than the outboard bull gear area, the rear axle and transmission are the same sump.

I thought it was the same reservoir. The dipstick by the shifter says it's full...but when I remove one of the drain plugs under the rear axle nothing comes out. So the lube from the trans. doesn't seem to be getting to the rear axle. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I havn't checked the outer drains yet with the vent tubes, but will check it next.

Thanks

Be sure you are not trying to drain the brake housing. they are dry brakes on this model and it is good if no oil comes out.

Thanks for the help Bluechip.

A few inches below the outer drives with the curved vent tubes there is a pipe plug. There is oil to just below the plug on each side...so that's ok. The transmission dipstick shows oil between the marks so it's full. In the center of the rear end underneath the third member is a drain plug and just on each side of that plug on the axle housings are two slightly smaller plugs. This is where no oil comes out. How do you get oil into this area....it doesn't seem to be getting there from the transmission.

The smaller ones are your brake housing, no oil in there is a good thing on this model.
