Kama wont run max rpm

Ok Greg, let me know how yours revs. Mine is a 2005 non epa. The air cleaner looks good, the filter should do me through another season.I hear what you are saying about the 540 pto, so I guess I should raise the max rpm some more. I use a 5' King Kutter and should run it at that higher rpm even though I have not been. One off topic question, where do you drain the front axle? I found 3 plugs, one on the bottom of the axle in the center, then one on each side at the bottom of the front wheel hub. Do they all share the same fluid, or does each wheel have a seperate sump?

Haven't been back to my 354 yet, but I haven't forgotten the RPMs. You're correct about the front axle, common sump. The outside drains are because there's oil in the outer assemblies that is "downhill" from the center drain. But they drain aggravatingly slow when it's cool/cold. You might want to run it back and forth out in the pasture for a while to get the gear oil warmed up before draining.

About the rpm for hog,,yeah probably but,,,,mine don't have a tach on it,[a 254 jinma],,so,,you gotta do it by ear and throttle setting,,,,if you don't need more,than you don't need more,,if its cutting good and motor is not lugging,than you are fine,,on light grass I hardly ever give it much more than 1/2 throttle,,on heavier stuff no more than about 3/4 throttle,and I got a 5 ft hog with just a 25 hp motor,so you would think yours could do same,,I never run it full throttle for anything,,maybe your tach is just not accurate? thingy

The throttle was going all the way to the stop. I went ahead and cut the wire between the stop and the rack adjustment and adjusted the throttle stop just enough to gain about 100-200 rpm at wide open. Im about 100 shy of the green on the tach and im satisfied.

Michael on my Foton FT 404 it was about 200 RPM to high acording to the book and I did as you, I cut the safty wire and readjusted the throttle stop.

FYI. It's not safety wire. It's a seal so you can tell if it's been tampered with.
I used to love it when governors came into the shop and customers would swear that "the dog must have chewed it off".

I have had a branch tear the lead seal/copepr wire off of my injector pump before... so it's not unheard of.. just doesn't happen very often i would assume.

Thingy... no tach on that tractor? why not? You can always get a vibration pickup tach to attach to the fuel line ...

Soundguy,it didn't come with one,,maybe the 254's from nortrac do now don't know,,,but it was not hard to get the hang without it,,now if it was lacking power ,it woulda been different but just go by ear,,,3/4 throttle is the most I ever think it needs,,it needs most using the 5 ft tiller,,but thats about and maybe,,slightly more,than 3/4 throttle,,,exhaust stack vibrates at certain rpm's,,,about 3/4 throttle it shows no vibration,,heard people talk of sweet spot with desil engines,,that must be it? Its set up about right,guess that would be govener?,,the thing people are talking about cutting a wire off? I wouldn't do that if I had a warrenty on it and only do that as last resort,,you would think that wire was there for a reason,,course,,I don't know,,,how do we know that cheap *** tach is not wrong? Would probably have more faith in motor than tach,,if it sounds good,,runs good, has plenty of power,common sense tells most that they don't need full throttle on a tractor,what does a tach do for you anyways,that your ears and common sense can't,,yeah things are meant to be run at certain rounds per min,,but relating that fact to a chinese tach?,,if you are hogging,,,and motor is humming right along,and its cutting good,,than your gear and rpm is about right,,if not than,maybe lower gear and or more throttle,,,,
Now mike said something about his smoking or something,,,so maybe its not got anything to do with governer or tach,,maybe its injectors or pump or dirt or water,,,course,,on other hand maybe his stuff was set wrong from factory,,hard to tell over internet,,,thingy

Hmm.. I think even the chinese tachs.. -should- be at least roughly calibrated. I can think of plenty of pto applications where I do want a good idea of pto rpm. Mowers aren't the only things that go back there...

Yeah,,not saying tach is not a good idea,and yes it would be nice to see what you are just hearing etc,,,,just saying you don't need one on my 254 for tilling and brushoging and post hole drilling,,and saying a tach that ain't right might cause more harm than good,,,for some people,,,,Now one o these big tractors using something that big tractors use yes,,you probably really need a working tach,,,You probably need one,,you got one of those batwing [great big] cutters I think? Yeah,it would be real nice in alota cases,,and a nessesity in some cases I guess,,,but not on a 254 jinma and probably not on mikes 354 karma,[think thats what it is?],if he is just hogging tilling or post hole drilling,,,thingy

Sorry to take so long getting back. The PTO (green) band on mine is 2200-2300, but it revs well past that with the hand throttle shoved full forward. I was on the ground on the left side of the tractor, so the viewing angle wasn't good. But the needle appeared to be close to 2600. It's run this way since I got it, meaning I've never touched either the governor or the throttle linkage.
