Keeping your legs warm

I got some flannel lined Jeans last fall. Wonderful things, those combined with longjohns and no wind seems to cut thru.

MossRoad, although I am now living in Provence France I do hail from Wisconsin and I really did enjoy reading about your cold weather gitup. You can siay what you want but growing up in the northern climates produces , for lack of a better word, sturdy/hardy people. When our kids had to wait or the bus in the dark before daylight their arms stuck out perpendicular from their bodies with their warm eather gear. Not only that you have to plan ahead an allow for enough time just to get dressed for outside and then of course the reverse once you got to school. Sue makes Hardy reliable peole, people who are attuned to their environment and learn at a very early age to manage their time because they literally can't just run down the street flagging down the bus at the last minute. All our kids were in full face masks and similar, although not the same extreme, as Moss describes. Hardy! (p.s. I wore my fair share of wool socks as mittons growing up, you do what it takes to keep you warm so that you can go outside and play and have fun!)

I sat on the ice for 4 hours Saturday and got overheated several times. Had to regulate my temps by removing layers to keep from sweating. Beautiful day... mid 20s, full sun, lots of geese.... and only one small fish. :p

Thrd Layer = Rainpants. They keep the first two layers dry and break the wind so the first two layers can do their job of trapping air and providing insulation.

I completely agree with this. Rainpants are one of the most overlooked piece of outdoor gear around.

For times when it is not so cold, I prefer rainpants over jeans to jeans over long johns. The reason is that if I get warm due to higher temps in the afternoon, or exertion (try quartering an elk in the woods and packing it out through 18" of snow), I can take the rainpants off without baring my tender bottom to the forces of nature.

In fact, I can take them off without taking my boots off.
