The propane ones are a different type, but work well and are less stinky and quieter.

Yes, and I find them to be cleaner to use. Connect the hose to the LP tank and your done. Gerard

OK... So Slowrev says propane torpedo heaters are a different type of heater while Gerard tells me to just connect the hose to my propane tank and I'm good to go. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm so glad I asked... /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Also needs A/C (power) to turn the fan in a torpedo heater. No power means you are going to heat zero.

Gary it was probably just a simple misunderstanding. The torpedo heaters can either be purchased to burn propane or kerosene. Unfortunately no single torpedo that I know of will burn both fuels.

I would love if they made a waste oil torpedo heater!

See Mother Earth for information on oil burners, vegetable oil and with mods, motor oil. Article and pictures are from 1980. Mother Earth has some great stuff!

Another article about the Mother Earth heater is at Mother Earth Oil Heater

When I worked in the oilfields about 40 years ago the crews would take a length of 6" or 8" pipe about 6' or 8' long, weld legs on it, attach a forge blower to the end, and run a line from a 55 gallon of "casing head" (crude oil) with a valve tapped into the big pipe about a foot from the blower. Don't remember how they lit it (very carefully?) but the blower atomized the dripping oil and it made a great heater.

I bought my Salamander heater today. Home Depot had the best deal going. I got a Pro Choice heater made by Desa (same as Reddy Heater by Desa) for $279.00 versus the Reddy at $352.00 I bought a 115K unit which will do me fine. I would really need the 200K unit to heat the whole barn. But when you are putting in floors there is just too much open area to try and heat everything up. Especially when there is a 12x24 open area in the floor. I spent 6 hours today in the barn and it was like being in back of a jet engine during takeoff. I put my shooters muffs on and kept them on all day. The weather outside was freezing rain, raw and cold. I was nice and toasty with the heater aimed at me from 20 feet away. The more floor boards I got in the warmer it got in the barn. Now I'm really glad I bought this heater. Even my feet were warm today. I didn't even need to wear my gloves either. I can't wait to get back to the floor boards tomorrow. Especially knowing that I will have heat to keep me from freezing my butt off.
