I still use an electric percolator that was given to me. Works great. The best percolator is the one that you can use on a fire.

No electrics to go out on it.

I like simple things.

I have both, I like my coffee hot and good old Maxwell House is fine with me. I fill the electric the night before so that it's ready to be plugged in.
The stove top is nice when the power goes out. Also, sometimes when I'm hunting I'll stop and build a fire in a gravel pit to cook lunch, a cup of fresh perked coffee with it goes down good.

After a while the electric stopped getting so hot. I bought a $10 thermostat online, now it's good for another 10 years.

It's hard to believe that we've taken something as simple as boiling water, and made it complicated.. unreal

I get your point - but it's not about boiling water. It's about convenience. The single cup brewers are quick, and you don't wind up pouring out a 1/2 pot of hours old coffee.

My wife uses the coffeemaker and not me, I nuke water in a cup and stir in a spoon of instant...at my age my taste buds cannot tell the difference anyway.

We use distilled water in our Keurig and haven't had to clean the water channel in months. Get the distilled water in 1 gallon jugs at Wally World for 84 cents each. I also use distilled water to top off lead acid batteries in vehicles and tractors.

Our Keurig will be 3 years old next month. The manual says to descale every 3 to 6 months, or anytime the "descale" light comes on. The light has never come on, but I've run the vinegar through it TWICE in 3 years. It was 20 months old the first time I decided to descale it. It got heated up and the vinegar barely dripped a bit, and stopped. Then it would not pump vinegar or water, and I finally decided it was dead and would have to be replaced. So, with nothing to lose, I took it out in the shop where my air compressor has 150 psi and I blew compressed into and through every place I even thought the air might go. Then I took it back in the house, put the vinegar back in it, finished descaling, flushed it with a couple of tanks of water, and it worked just fine. So 4 months later I descaled it again with nothing unusual happening, and it's worked just fine ever since. Maybe I ought to try descaling again, since the last time was January 3 of this year.

I have to pay 88 cents a gallon at Wally World, and use the distilled water in my CPAP machine, but have never used it in the coffee maker.

A cleaning alternative to vinegar is to use ascorbic acid. We learned this years ago from our local appliance repair man. He was up repairing the stove and we mentioned the spots on glassware from the dishwasher. He said to use ascorbic acid (vitamin C powder) rather than the commercial (and expensive) dishwasher additives. Adding a bit(teaspoon?) each time works great to prevent spots and keep the dishwasher free of scale.

Going to try this one. You can also get ascorbic acid in the canning section of the store. We have a big jug of the stuff.

Later,
Dan

So...you just dump the powder into the rinse dispenser? What is the ratio? We have used Jet-Dri in our GE dishwasher since it was new (2003) and the cost is very low. Come on now. I want to learn REAL FACTS from members who have used this method of ascorbic acid...not just hearsay. And BTW. what rgustafson says about using distilled water to top off batteries...I have NOT HAD TO TOP OFF A BATTERY THE LAST 15 years...be it a car, truck, ATV, tractor, RV, battery, whatever....

Guess you are just lucky then. Ever check your batteries?
