Wow, that's a nice one. Built pretty stout too. Thanks for sharing the pic.

2" x 1/2" square tubing is what my hiller bedder is made of. Standard size from what I can see.
3/16 square tubing, I think is too light for building it.

Here is mine off of ebay with 2 extra discs. That piece in the middle was something I tried out for smoothing - coming off.

I think this year for smoothing the top of the row I'm going to try attaching a short drag of chainlink fence....

Chris

Good info... I hadn't considered that issue yet. I'll check and see what my neighbors do. They have some very neat rows/hills.

Folks around here area getting into a process that has a hiller and some sort of plastic that is put down first then dirt hilled over the sides of the plastic and right off the center is some sort of plastic hose. Real thin has tinny holes in it that you hook up to a water hose. Sort of like a soaker hose. My dad was telling me about a guy planted his corn like that the same time as my dad and his was ready way before my dads was. He said he also produced more corn. Haven't seen any of the equipment like this. He did say it was sort of a pain to plant. You have to plant through the plastic somehow.

A farm not too far from here uses this method with tomato plants. Boy do they grow fast! It's quite interesting to watch. There appears to be irrigation under the hill but I can't say 100% for sure.

Ran across this video while looking for hiller ideas...

I've never seen corn planted thru plastic, but I guess you could do it, just take right tools. I've seen hiller / bedders that lay down plastic and drip tape, and transplanters that go thru plastic, but nothing for individual seeds.

Yep, Thats the process. Guy told my dad that he turns the water to it once a week for 4 hours. Thats it. The plastic keeps the weeds out and the water can't evaporate from under the plastic so it grows like crazy. He said it works real well if you want to spend a little extra time planting. He said it kind of a mess to clean up at the end of the year, but he said they are coming out with a plastic now that has the drip run already in the plastic which will help out in cleaning it up.
