Kia Fire Issue

The wife of a drummer friend of mine had a terrible experience a couple days ago. She was driving down the road when someone pulled up next to her and told her that her car was on fire. She stopped and got out just in time to watch her car burn. She had these pictures on her Facebook page.

When she was looking at the Souls a few years ago, I told her I liked mine a lot (mine is a 2014), and highly recommended them. After finding out last night that this is apparently a known issue with Kia and Hyundai, I'm a little less comfortable in my car than I have been for the last 4 years.

The keyboard player from a previous band posted a picture on Facebook yesterday of a Hyundai sitting on the shoulder of I-64 in St. Louis County with the engine on fire.

Seems like 400+ reports of engine fires should trigger a bit more than mild concern with the NTSB, not to mention Kia/Hyundai.

That's disturbing news since my wife drives a 2011 Sorento. I would like to know the location and which wires were found on the cars that didn't burn but had melting wires so I could inspect them. Nevertheless I WILL be looking over the engine compartment to see if I see any. I told her about the potential and to make sure if she smells anything out of the ordinary to pull over and get out.

The Sorento has been a good reliable car so far. I did feel slighted by them compensating 2013 owners for false fuel mileage claims but not our 2011. Ours was rated at 29 highway but we have never gotten better than 24. We also have to run 89 octane to keep it from pinging. Over all we have spent a lot more than it should have on fuel but not a lot on repairs.

My Wife drives a 2012 Sorento. She had an '04 Sorento before that, a Sedona minivan before that, and a Sephia before that. The Soul is Kia #5, and we've never had any major issues with any of them. After my friend's wife's incident, I was surprised to find that there have been so many reported incidents. I hadn't heard a thing about this until Monday, and it's apparently been going on for some time now.

My attitude about these vehicles shifted dramatically this week. I hope they can find the cause and fix it.

I always found it ironic that the U.S. spent lives and fortunes defending South Korea, all the POW's-KIA's sacrificed so that they could put Detroit out of business; and they go and name the car: KIA!
I'm not saying it's a eternal sin worthy of damnation to buy a Korean car, but its true your Soul may burn.

The Kia souls might be a nice car, but I wouldn't want to keep one forever. I mean it isn't like I'd want to sell my Soul, but...

South Korea was an alli , I don't understand driving a Japanese vehicle!
