KIds DO NOT belong on lawn mowing equipment

My Lady friend drives my equipment from time to time, but totally freaks out when things appear dangerous. She looses any objectivity and is incapable of calm response to the situation.

Years ago, I let a GF drive our tractor. She could not decide to go one way or another and went in between where there happened to be a large decorative rock. She paniced and pulled back on the throttle to full. It hit the stone, throwing us both off, then proceeded to drive into the house.

This is what can happen when you let inexperienced people drive equipment. It's not when things are going fine and everyone is smiling, that worry me..

Conventional wisdom claims that children shouldn't touch anything sharper than a bowling ball or heavier than a penny so as to avoid injury. When I was a child toys could kill and maim and since stupid hurt, we all got smart and those same toys weeded out the stupid babies so they didn't grow up and become a danger us all.

I love roundabouts! :thumbsup:

I just blasted my horn behind someone that stopped before entering one today because, oh my goodness, there was another car about to enter the roundabout 90 degrees and 100' away! HORRORS! :laughing:

On that note, I had to reset my "Haven't used my horn in X days" poster to 0.

I've found that purposely trying not to use my horn is much more difficult that using it.

Lovely Roundabouts. Light traffic all is fine and dodgem is the order of the day. Heavy traffic and the driving gets real easy. Traffic stops and is backed up

Round abouts are certainly better than 4-way stops. Dont have to worry about getting ticketed if you.....wait for it......didnt come to a complete and absolute stop.:mur:

A roundabout is kinda like a 4-way stop, with each direction having two lanes.....and stops being optional.

Now weather they are better than a traffic light, with proper turn lanes and light timing.....i dont know.

She was so petite that she couldn't keep the seat safety switch engaged and steer at the same time, so that experiment was a failure, as I expected (I didn't really want her on the mower, anyway). Sadly, by the time she was old enough for me to be comfortable with her doing the mowing, she had moved on to other interests that didn't seem so much like work.

supposedly studies have been done showing they are more efficient. We sure are getting a lot of them around here, as well as the diverging diamonds.

It's all I see driving in Europe... it does take a different mindset to break old habits...

IIRC, Mythbusters found them to be 20% more efficient than a 4 way stop. The Washington state DOT has a page about them claiming that they are about the same cost as an intersection, but $5-10k less per year to operate and they say that they are much safer. See: WSDOT - Roundabout Benefits
