Kids on Tractors

Does the no rider rule stand even fro tractors with fender seats? My Grandfather bought his tractor new in 1968 and it came with one extra seat on each rear fender. The "Seat is little more than a round railing raised about 8 inches on 3 sides and a small footrest ledge. It was first come first served with Grandpa and all of us Grandkids would line-up early so we would have a chance to ride with him haying. Great memories!!

Well i bet it was fun for you as a kid to ride with him. I bet that tractor didn't come with the seats but old Grandpop was thinking ahead.
I grew hay for a few years not a whole lot just 40 acres . I t was hard work but always enjoyed it as long as it didn't rain.
Never saw a tractor come from the factory with more than one seat . What make was it anyway ? My point is when things go bad on a tractor they happen fast and a kid riding along can get hurt quick.
Now taking one for a little ride while not working is different.
While i wouldn't do it ,i can see why some might. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

But they are out there. I've seen a few.

That's great for you....and thanks for the history lesson on farming. As stated, the "kid" can barely talk. He two years old and I was taking him for what I thought was a safe ride on level ground and he almost lost an eye.

Why I bother with TBN sometimes I don't know.

You didn't mention the child's age in the original post. Yes, that is too young to be on any kind of operating equipment.

I still maintain some of that is good for them.

So do I. That's why when he jumps off a stool and smashes his face on a table I don't run over and immediately check after him. This was a situation I put him in without his knowledge or understanding.

True, there is a difference between the situation being of the child's own doing or not. I was not trying to inflame any parental instincts. I do not want my kids to ever feel any pain, unfortunatley, I cannot prevent that. Be it from the first smashed thumb w/ a hammer or the first broken heart.
I did not mean to sound callous or hard hearted.

hudr,

That's fine....Didn't mean to jump at you like that. No worries.

Jim, No apologies necessary. I think that is a major failing of this medium for communication. You get no inflection, no body language to help w/ the dialogue.
It boils down to this: we both love the little rascals and if we could, we'd put them in a cocoon away from all harm. And I think I dread that first broken heart more than anything else. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
