Just took down a couple of trees today and I want to put some killer on the stumps to prevent suckers growing this Spring. Was going to use a mix of diesel and roundup. Question is can I treat them now (mid winter) or do I have to wait for Spring and things to start growing? I'm guessing the stumps won't take up the mix this time of year, but I don't know for sure. Thanks

There is some green stuff you squirt around the edge of the cut that I saw tree crews using. I asked but, can't remember what it's called. Worked really well as no suckers came up this last year.

I use Access and Diesel , it is $109 per litre/quart . It is mixed 60-1 and is painted/sprayed onto the stump . I would re-cut them if i were you and paint them within 30 seconds of cutting them . Just take off a couple of inches more to freshen them up . As with all trees , you must poison them within the 30 seconds or they will start to heal over and not accept the poison . Concentrate on the Cambium layer and the bark as the heartwood will not absorb liquid . It is also possible to drill holes on an angle around the stump and pour some poison straight into the holes . Don't drill into the heartwood , only into the Cambium layer .

The green stuff is Tridon RTU. It works

The easiest way to kill a tree or stump is drive a copper nail into it, it poison's it. A trick I learned from a old farmer years ago that has worked great for me over the years.

Use Roundup (or equivalent) concentrate and a disposable brush. Within about 10 minutes of cutting the tree, "paint" the concentrate onto the cambial layer (between the bark and wood). That should be enough to kill most trees. If you are concerned about regrowth, painting the whole cut surface will make sure. If the trees have been cut for a while, recut before putting the herbicide on them.

Oh, pour the herbicide into a seperate container so you don't contaminate your whole jug.

Interesting I have never heard of the copper nail. In fact I'm not sure if I have ever seen one. Ill definitely look in the hardware store now.Maybe they are used more for the copper roofs?
Anyways Id assume that a hole drilled with some used stripped copper electrical wire would do the same And often more handy to have .
Sounds like a good tip. worth a try id say

Hey, thanks for the ideas. Guess I was way off on waiting until Spring. Wow, 10-30 minutes is all you get. I'll re-cut them then mix up some round-up and diesel and paint the cambium layer (learned a new word today!) and maybe drill a few holes and insert some solid copper wire too just to make sure.
