Killing Stumps

No need for the diesel. Just use roundup straight. Some herbicides mix with diesel for bark and stump application, but roundup does not.

You can drill a few holes in the stump and put amonium nitrate fertilizer in the holes. That works as well.

I just did three yesterday. Cut the stumps as low to the ground as possible. Put my carbide chain on the chainsaw. Cut an X in the middle of the stump as deep as the saw will go and filled up the 16" hole with diesel. Now let's see you grow, sucker.

Interesting I have never heard of the copper nail. In fact I'm not sure if I have ever seen one. Ill definitely look in the hardware store now.Maybe they are used more for the copper roofs?
Anyways Id assume that a hole drilled with some used stripped copper electrical wire would do the same And often more handy to have .
Sounds like a good tip. worth a try id say

You can dig around one of the feeder roots and wrap the bare copper wire around it a dozen times. That will work just as well as driving some copper nails into it.

Basically, the contact area is the key. The more copper in contact with the outer layers, the better. The Copper gets absorbed into the tree and distributes itself in the outer layer and prevents water from being absorbed. No water, No growth. Trees normally contain copper sulfate to regulate water intake and prevent root rot in damp areas so it takes a big "Overdose" of Copper to initiate the tree's demise.

An added benefit is that the copper preventing water absorption causes the roots to shrink as they dry out and makes removing the stump a lot easier.

If you look at good commercial root killers, you will see that copper sulfate is a typical ingredient.

As stated , Roundup and Diesel wont mix . Any Glyphosate will do , i use "Access" so i never have to come back . This paragraph i lifted with Snagit from a herbicide brochure states that poison must be applied within 30 seconds .

Got any deer in the area? How about trying some "Stump Likker"?

I want to know if the stuff works!!! Basically molasses and minerals for the deer. They are supposed to paw and chew at the stump until its gone!

I'm not familiar with Tordon. Is it a restricted use product? I've read that some products like Spike are so effective that they will kill other trees in the area whether you want them to or not.

Haven't heard the copper nail method until now. I have a thorn tree stump that keeps coming back, and I have a couple of copper nails......

Don't believe Tordon RTU is RUP. You can get it at Tractor Supply/ Orscelen's.

The prolem with Tordon and others like it, Remedy, is the cost. If your doing a lot, the cost is ok, but expensive to buy to do just a few.

If your only doing a few stumps, 2-4D and diesel will probably work the best. 2-4d is cheap and is a broad leaf herbicide. I've found after years of experminting that diesel works fairly well by itself on many trees. Winged elm can't stand it and die quickly with a basil stem treatment. Sure saves over adding expensive chemicals.
