Hey ya'll I'm back with another DIY farm repair, this time replacing the gearbox seals and bearing on a King Kutter 5ft PTO tiller. One day when I arrived at the farm I noticed a large pool of gear oil under the right hand side of the tiller. I ended up tracing it to coming out the tine shaft hub that connects to the gearbox. There are 2 seals inside tucked behind a bearing that were the source of the leak.

If anyone has any questions about the job feel free to ask!

Considering the cost of a new gearbox complete from ASC, I would have just replaced it with a new one...

Maybe I missed it somewhere . . . What is the cost of a new gearbox?

I have the same tiller. It's been used hard and sat outside for about 20 years. Sure hasn't been babied. It does a fantastic job -- it's my favorite implement to operate because of the beautiful seedbed it leaves behind. Well worth repairing! Mine isn't leaking YET. Thanks for the post and video.

Older thread that I missed the first time around... Likewise, I got an old one that has sat outside for it's life. Hope to work with it some this year....

I have the 5' KK tiller as well. It's a beast of a tiller and works very well. Picked mine up for $600 and had been used once.

Old thread. Great video. Whole new gearbox vs two seals? I'd go with replacing the seals...

My 5' kk has been very good to me, better than I have been to it. It did leak oil not long after I bought it. KK told me to run 00 grease in it. I did and all is still good
I once left the stand leg down and somehow it ended up in the tines giving the slip clutch a good work out. Yep, not to mention the stand leg and its mount looked different, also bent in the side plate in to boot. With some heat, my 4lb hammer, large cresent wrench and krylon old equipment yellow paint had the KK tiller back tilling the same day.

I did weld some trash guards on the drive side to keep twine and other stringy junk from wrapping around the tine shift and into the seals of the gear box. The old maletti tiller had them and they worked good, and the trash guards work just the same on the KK.
