I just purchased a new 6ft KK box blade for my Kubota L4740. I would like to beef up the box blade while adding weight to it.

The side plates look to be 1/4inch I will be adding another 1/4 inch plate to the outsides.

What other weak points do you guys know of, I have some plate 16"x32"x1/4", some 4inch channel and 3.5 x3.5 angle Iron. I also have some round plate 1/4-3/8th thick-- 9inch 12inch 14inch diameter for just weight.

What would you do to beef up the box blade. I would like to add about 150-200lbs to it

I want to do this because I have so much clay and rock type soil my last 5 ft KK sometimes just bounced over the terrain, it worked great in good soil

Big question.

The side plates are good for weight, not strength so much.

The bottom 3pt attach points, the scarifier bar and the top link connection are weak. The back of the box that supports the blades is also pretty prone to bending. Beef up those parts. Does the box have captured pins (2 loops per side that the 3pt lower arms go into and a pin is then slid in?) They are much easier to use on a heavy tool. You may want to convert.

I use several 120 lb concrete weights on my little 4-ft KK box blade

<The back of the box that supports the blades> I was considering welding the channel iron on the back down as low as possible to help support the blades

< Does the box have captured pins> Not yet but trying to figure a way to do this and hopefully it would also help support the square box that holds the rippers

I may try to weld some plate on the bars of the upper 3 point to make it a little more rigid. I really need a plasma cutter:D

Sometimes I wonder if over beefing may harm the tractor. Like hitting the hidden stump that stops you dead, you know going from 5mph down to zero in less than a inch:eek:

I still think it needs more weight which also means it needs to be beefed up a bit. I would rather do it now than have to fix things after they bend or brake.
Thanks for the reply

did you get your Box blade modified. Any changes you would make now you have used it some? Looking to do the same and pictures, comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

the best bet is to look at a med or heavy duty bb at a dealer and see where the bracing is. on a land pride you'll find the end plate are thicker, and there is bracing in the upper corners at the back of the blade, also the scarifiers look to be built out of heavier(thicker) steel

Take the time to review the specs, build of a WOODS GB 72 or WOODS HB 72

WOODS is the best by far, good luck with the mods.

the bracing looks good the end plates i would think would be thicker on a med to heavy duty unit. also i don't care for the nountiong of the scarifiers seems like it could be a weak point. do a search and check out land pride.

I just borrowed a 6' KKII and I think adding more wt would accelerate wear on the drive train. I think making a pass with disc is a nice way to speed up the process or make several passes. I am lucky because I have no red clay
