Greetings,

I have pretty much talked myself into a box blade to maintain my 1300' gravel driveway. I can't though, get myself to agree on spending the dollars for a Landpride or similar 'high-end' unit. I'm only seeing a 2-3 time a year use, and its all on process gravel. It shouldn't get much abuse.

I stopped by a supplier today and unfortunately the only salesguy was out sick. I did notice a KK unit that had extra thick sides ( ? 3/8" ) and a hinged back. This doesn't appear to show up on their limited website.

Anybody know about this version ? Model # ?
What are the advantages to a hinged back ??
Can my TC35D drag a 7' box blade ???

I will be getting a hydro top link at the same time.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi,

I have a 5' KK box blade. For the money I am happy with it.

Mine has 5/16 sides I think. For the price it is hard to beat in my opinion. I wanted more but ended up with the KK.

If you are not planning to do heavy cutting with it, but rather spreading gravel or crushed stone, I would bet you could pull a 7 footer. Digging deep is another story.

A couple days ago I spread some crushed limestone on a parking area [only 8 tons] and I was surprised how much nicer the box blade works, as compared to back dragging with the loader.

I tilted the box back and had no problem with dragging the stone with the back cutting blade. The front blade was an inch or more higher than the back in that position.

TC,

Can't comment on KK, but you should assume you will use it more than you think. I've used mine twice this year already--consider the fact that in MN I don't need it in Jan and Feb. For me, the box blade was the hardest to learn how to use, but a pretty amazing tool--considering its simple design.

I have a 500 foot driveway and I make one pass with the tines (not the correct word) down in order to really rough things up. Then I make a pass using just the blade in order to finish it off. If you use this method, you will see more wear and tear than if you use the blade to simply smooth out the driveway.

I paid just over $500 for my Landpride 5 foot. Not cheap, but I really like it.

Good Luck

Bob

Do you have any Midwest dealers up there? You can get them shipped fairly cheap from Carver Equipment, if you don't mind putting things together (a boxblade ought to be pretty simple). I just purchased the 30 series 6' boxblade for $430 from Carter and Carter. This is more than 600 pounds and has 1/2 " endplates--a very solid unit for the money. Midwest's website

I used a 5' KK box blade to carve up my whole back yard and it worked out great. With the hydraulic tilt on my Iseki it worked like a charm. Well worth the money!

I have probably read every thread on 4 or 5 forums for 2 years and have never heard of anyone using the rear blade in anythig but the locked position. I think the hinged part is just too light to be effective. Seems to be a waste of money.

In theory, a hinged back lets you cut in more agressively than a fixed back. It allows your front edge to plunge into the ground more easily. The disadvantage is that it is harder to use the boxblade for smoothing when going forward (a common technique for smoothing is to tilt the box back a bit so the front cutting edge is off the ground a bit, and the fixed rear edge spreads & smooths the material in the box). A hinged, lockable tailgate is the best of both worlds, but you generally only see them in more expensive units.

I would not immagine you'd get much advantage from a hinged rear blade for driveway maintenance, but I could be wrong.

Just priced up that KK box blade....Its heavy duty and doesn't show up in the catalog. It has a hinged back blade and clevis style lift points. I'd guess the sides are maybe 3/8" steel. It's a 6' unit. Local guy wants $799.

I can get a First Choice BB3084 shipped to me direct for
$ 725.

They also quoted me $ 225 for a TISCO Cat 1 hydraulic top link.

OUCH !!

Call Carver and get a Midwest boxblade shipped to you--heavier duty and cheaper. You'll just have to assemble it.

What was the shipping costs for the Mid-west box blade from Carvers (New York???) down to Charlottsville Va

Did you have to be home to recieve it or did you pick it up at a trucking company?

I just left Charlottsville at 6:00 AM this morning. Was working at Univ of Va for a few days

Hey Bartman,

I did not end up getting it from Carver. I drove down to Tennessee to pick it up from Carter and Carter. Was cheaper for me, only about 3 hours from my farm (in Lexington) and I didn't want to mess with assembly (my tools are at my house, while I need the implements on my farm. No outbuildings yet!) Can't recall the shipping but it was very reasonable. Not sure if you have to pick it up--don't think so. Next time your in C'ville, look me up.
