King Kutter Disc

Opinions on a 6.5' King Kutter disc? New for $799. Angle iron frame. Scalloped discs in front, smooth in back. 20 discs total. Discs are 16" (i think). Most used discs I've found have been around this same price, and mostly well used condition. This would be used for a half acre garden that is full of rocks. I already have a plow, so it would just be to break up the clods and smooth out the soil.

I have a Fronteir DH13 for my JD 5103. It's built really well.

But for the price, I think the King Kutter is decent. The operative words here are "for the price". A half acre garden isn't going to be more than that angle frame disc can handle.

So if you want to buy something new, I think it's a good option. Otherwise, you can look for something used like you said. You'll just get a disc with more dings and scrapes on it.

The used market around here is really tough for discs, no used farm equipment dealers have them, and on craigslist they go really fast for nearly-new prices, and I've never seen a box frame in person nor used and for sale. It seems like the price is about right, and I've already plowed the garden. I'll probably pick it up.

I had a 5 1/2 foot King Kutter box frame disc which I used for 6 years on about 4 acres of food plots ...in real rocky soil....and it worked well and held up well. I sold it recently and bought a 6 1/2 foot box frame disc from Tractor Supply for about $1300. The only reason I sold it was to get one large enough to cover my wheel tracks. The box frames are however heavier than the angle iron frame.

The KK disc harrow would be adequate for the garden task you contemplate. If you were to buy a heavier, box- frame disc harrow, with about 40 pounds bearing on each disc, it is possible you could sell your plow.

A 600-700 pound disc harrow would pull easily behind your Grand L3540, whether 16 or 20 wheels moving dirt.

When I buy "light duty" I regret it later.

I own a Landpride dh1572 disk built with a tube frame and scalloped front and rear discs. I till my half acre garden with this unit. no need for plow,rototiller or field culivator.
