Doing the initial lubrication of the outboard bearing on a new King Kutter 5' tiller, got to the outboard bearing and was wondering how much grease this thing holds. The drawing shows quite a cavity behind the bearing, maybe 8 to 16 ounces volume. Any experience greasing this bearing? Should I add grease until it shows up exiting somewhere or what? Thanks. Max.

I've had trouble understanding how to grease this bearing too. Seems to me there is a big spring loaded reservoir.....as I have put lots of grease into it initially....and the excess slowly spits back out at the zerk over a few hours.

Now I just add about 4 strokes from the gun each time I use it. I believe I am overdoing the grease on this zerk....but have never had a good explanation of what is going on with this bearing.

I greased my new one a couple of weeks ago. I just kept pumping in grease until it started coming back out. I am guessing 6 oz. Also, when I went to fill up the gear drive, it was already filled. I poured a little in, and then it came right back out. I was suprised that it already had grease in it. But it did.

I had the same problem with mine. Now that I think about it, I should have unscrewed the Zerk and had a look see. Actually, in my case the grease was initially coming out of the gasket between the brg housing and the frame, so I removed it and used RTV to reseal. After fixing the gasket, I would give it 4 or 5 shots of grease and most of it just seemed to come back out of the Zerk. I have never seen any grease coming out of the bearing compartment. It's a mystery.

Hey fellas, I just finished a repair job on a New Holland tiller and I had the cover off the "outboard bearing", which I believe is pretty much the same set-up in all tillers. It works just like a greaseable wheel hub on a trailer (boat or utility trailer), grease builds up inside the cover and eventually makes its way into the ball bearings. When I grease mine, I usually have the tiller running at idle and I feel that helps work the grease in and takes away the spit-back through the Zerk. Just remember to be safe around the tines! Hope this helps out.

P.S. Don't get crazy with the number of pumps from the grease gun, you don't want to blow out the seal on the other side of the bearing and open the door for dirt to get in!

I think I will drill and tap the housing for a 1/4 inch plug that I can remove while greasing so I don't push the seal out. Thanks.

This is the reply I got from King Kutter:

Thank you for your business. Technician said that it only needs about 15 shots. If you have any further questions, please don稚 hesitate to call 205-487-3202 and ask for tech support. He will be glad to help. Again, thank you for your business and have a great day!
