Max, I'm sure that you know that a new hoist will sell for less than $200 anywhere and I have found that Samsclub has a nice one
and some autoparts stores will rent you one cheap

Jim,

Yeah... that's what I told my father, but he likes to build stuff, since he is a machinist and what not... it'll just give him a reason to use his pipe bender or milling machine, or something... He likes to tinker... :)

But, I agree with ya! If he wasn't going to build me one, I would just buy an el cheapo at Sams or something... I'll see how soon he is going to get his wild creation to me... I might just borrow something from a buddy in the mean time, but I do have some other options that I'm going to try. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Maxi,
Just picked up my 72" KK tiller at TSC today. It's been on layaway since mid Jan. when I found a 10% off any one TSC item coupon in my mailbox. Paid for it then but didn't get the trailer relicensed 'til last week.

I've got a 6 acre hayfield and some food plots that I want to turn up with it. I plan to plow with a 2 x14 bottom plow first and then go over it with the tiller instead of discing and dragging. Got lotsa rocks. Glad to hear that they shouldn't be a show stopper.

Plan to pull it with the kubota L4300 (HP: 45/37PTO). The tractor should be enough to handle 72" in plowed ground; I expect it might be marginal on hard ground. The Ford 4000 will probably handle it OK too.

Keep us informed of your progress/experiences with the tiller.

Bob,

Sounds like you've got a good plan with your tiller. I'm sure the farmers by me are going to get ready to plant soon... or at least they want too... Corn and soy beans... 72" is a great size and I'm sure your Kobota will have no issues at all with the tiller, I'll for sure keep you guys posted about when I start to use it and bring this thread back to life :) now that I think about it, I have some more pictures to share of me getting that heavy thing out of my van (fun times)... So, I'll be posting them in a few.

I got one and have used it for 3 years now,5 ft one,,one thing,,you might want to think about, depending on the tractor probably,is the tilt or angle it sets at,,when you pick it up,with it running,,it will bind u joint if you pick it up to far,,you can help this buy changeing the angle with your top link,,think I got mine setting back a little,so's I can pick it up a foot or so with out clink clink bang bang. another is the slip clutch,,don't leave it outside in rain,,and you need to test it and adjust as you need,,,,you back off nuts evenly till you can turn it by hand,,than tighten evenly untill you get it to where it will slip if you hit a big rock or something, but won't slip by just normal tilling,,takes a little trying.
Best thing is to leave the depth shoes about where they are or middle of the road,,and make two passes,,those depth shoes don't really control your depth anyways,,,they just keep sinking in soft dirt and tiller just keeps going deeper with each pass,,they will hold it up in hard dirt,so,,just figure on making at least two passes. Speed,,I got a creeper on my jinma and till very slow,,,bout have to have a very low gear to till right.
Put your 3 point in float,,and let tiller go up and down as needed. Its a beast,,probably out last 3 tractors,,,,,thingy

Any one with this tiller, is it safe to till up soil that has small rocks? My back yard next to my barn is wild and needs tamed, but there are a few stones in the soil and who know what else...

Max, I've got the exact tiller except mine is in it's 4th season now. It has probably 250 hours tilling so far. There are some dents, 2 broken tines and a couple of cracked welds, but I am adamant to not till any rocks or stones that are larger than a basket ball. Well, there are a few hidden rocks that are larger than than, but it won't pull them out of the ground. One area has a rock that must be 6' across as the ground shakes and shimies when you go over it. Stumps and roots are a big issue too. Silly trees are always trying to grab onto the tines and stop them. Never have, but they keep trying.

Read about the slip clutch. Now, read it again. ALWAYS, adjust the slip clutch if the tiller has sat for 2 weeks or more. ALWAYS slip the clutch to make sure it is able to rotate, then tighten it down. Slip clutches are nice -when YOU do the maintenance correctly. They are a solid non-slipping disaster waiting to happen if you don't. If you are the type of person that blows off maintenance, ditch the slip clutch and get a shear bolt. Or a new PTO assembly and maybe differential housing. Either way, if you blow off slip clutch maintenance in stony ground, you will be buying something expensive.

John,

Thank you, THANK YOU VERY MUCH about the slip slutch information, I've been reading through the manual, but it's information from guys like you that help the most since you've been using the tiller for quite some now... I'll double check what they reccomend in the book about the clutch and then make sure that I'm up on it... Sounds like this tiller should do what I need it to do... Esp. with what you've put the poor thing through :D

Again, thank you all! this is why this community is such a great place! The power of the internet! :p

Well, I tasted the pudding this afternoon and it tasted good:D

I went to my place to try my 5 foot tiller for the first time. I lubed it previously but needed to come back to trim the PTO shaft. I ended up cutting about 6 inches on both parts of the PTO shaft to remove chance of binding my drive system and being able to easily mount and dismount:rolleyes:
Any how no problems and tried it on my newly potato plowed garden site. it was a bit bumpy ride till I got the hang of it. I tilled only few inches with lowest gear speed and around 2000 engine rpm or may be about 500 PTO. I did not have any rocks and the tiller sure whipped up the dirt good with no hesitation. My next run I let it lower and actually increased the speed a tad and she showed no hesitation chumping the ground. Now I appreciate how important it is to cover your tire track.:D All and all it took me about 30 minutes to do my 15'x150' garden site. I then decide to go ahead and try it on part of the pasture withouts pre middle busting. I made 3 deer food plot each between 1/3 to 1/4 acres just going over the grass only twice, first time may be 2 to 3 inches to bust the sod and then 6 inches deep. It sure made a easy task of it and I spent no more than 60 minutes. Now, I did not have rocks and major debris where I selected to put the food plot and soil is also good. I had great moisture content as the ground was not dry but not very moist either.. just right. It seems my little F-1700 had no problem with the task the temp gage did not even come to the middle although we had a cold morning here in Kansas.. Just typical Kansas spring:(

I give my King kutter two Thumbs up and expect t to keep up the good work for many years to come.

Attached are some show and tell pictures.

Garden Plot, Can't keep the deer out but cows are out for sure.

JC,

Looks great man! I have to do sort of the same stuff... More barn work then anything. I'm going to try and get the tiller lubed today and I hope to have the shaft(s) cut later on this week or weekend. I'm really glad to hear that the KK is working well for you. I can not wait to put mine to work, I've got quite a lot of stuff to do with it... Oh, and it's cold back here in good ole Ohio... Where is spring?
