I need some advice on the size of a mower to be pulled behind a Super M. The M is approx 50hp. Should I get the mower with the 40hp gearbox or the 60hp gearbox. We will be cutting old pasture land and an occasional 1 inch diameter poplar sapling. I am getting mixed answers from the dealers on gear box size. Would like to get the 6ft deck. Thanks.

On a 6' cutter, I think you will be fine with the 40 hp gearbox, but I would not go any larger without going to 60 hp. Your cutter will have a shearbolt on the PTO shaft which will limit the input torque to the gearbox. The only thing you have to watch with the tractor's hp is that you must feather the PTO when you engage it. If you engage the PTO too quickly, the tractor will snap the shearbolt like a twig and you'll have an extra chore before you start cutting.

Yep thats the truth..
I carry extra shear bolts just in case i forget to idle down
b4 engaging pto, learned the hard way lol..

I agree with jinman considering the hp at the pto on that super M is about 42, when new.. add 50 years use.. and I bet it's matched with a 40hp gear box nicely..
