Hi all,

Was talking to a dealer about the 1914 and ck20 ( gear ) and he advised that one of the drawbacks to them is that they did not have " live PTO ".

I asked what this meant and he said that if you were pulling a bush hog, when you pushed the clutch petal in, the bush hog may keep pushing you. Also said that when using a snowblower, when you stopped the blower would clog up as it was still running full tilt.

So does this mean that the PTO can be really problematic unless you know your implements, plan ahead where you are stopping, etc.

As there seems to be a fair number of these tractors around, do people just cope with it or is there a way around it to make it a little more safe.

Any advise that you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

I have an LK2554 which I think works the same way as a 1914. When I push in the clutch, the pto stops spinning. If the rotating mass in the attachment is large enough, it could push the tractor forward without the engine being engaged to the transmission. I use a 5foot RFM and have never felt this problem. I think there is an over running clutch in the tractor that keeps this from happening. Probably the same thing in the 1914. That said, the only problem I have with my setup is that when I change directions, I push in the clutch, the mower stops and I have to bring it up to speed in the other direction. Only a problem if I have to go from forward to reverse a lot. An independant pto would stay at speed no matter what you were doing with the transmission. It would be a nice feature, but, not a big deal for me.

I, too, have a 1914 and the clutch/PTO issue is just that, a non issue. Yes, the POT follows along and winds up and winds down with the transmission, but it has never presented a problem and works nicely. Admittedly, however, I do not need a snowblower, but when using the bush hog in tall, tall grass stopping and starting, when necessary, has never presented any problem for the PTO and the bush hog operaiton.

Since transmission driven pto follows engine rotation and engages and disengages with clutch, is it advisable when you get bogged down in tall grass to lift the rotary cutter up, put transmission in neutral, clutch and engage PTO and after rotary cutter picks up speed lower it ,clutch, and put the tractor in gear and proceed forward. Of course with either added overrunning clutch to pto shaft or having one with internal one way clutch . Has anyone done that?

The PTO's in these tractors have an over-running clutch in them to prevent the tractor from pushing you forward when you are using the PTO and press the clutch in. Your dealer should know abou this.

Hi,

Thanks for the input. Really appreciated.

Well, yes, dealer should have known and maybe did know about the over running clutch but did not have any 1914's on the lot However he did have a CK20 with HST all ready to go. Made sure that I knew the CK20 with HST would not have the PTO issue. Long as I didn't mind paying $4K more it would not have been an issue.

As stated before, thanks for the valuable insight.

Have a great day

Tom

Hi Jon,

No question I would probably love the CK20 but was looking primarily at the 1914's as very cost effective.
And wow, could I tell some stories about the variance in pricing between dealers on the 1914, CK20, etc.
But, I guess that is the way it goes.

Again, thanks to all. Appreciate the help.

Tom
