Hey Guys, thanks for the great comments. I've never heard of a bucket spade before- they look interesting- I'll do more looking into that. I'm not going to get a backhoe because the rocks are to big and numerous around here for anything less than a much bigger, dedicated machine. The bucket spade doesn't seem too expensive and might be handy so long as I avoid the big rocks.

I'm already looking at the piranha tooth bar - they seem to be highly regarded.

I had not thought about the narrower bucket in regards to operating in snow. We do get alot of snow here. I'm thinking that about the only thing I'll be using the tractor in winter for will be snow removal- in that case, I'll probably get a front snow plow blade.

It looks like I'll probably go with the 60" bucket- hopefully it does turn out to be more heavy duty the the 66". I'll keep you guys posted when I get it.

I don't use my tractor for snow removal but if I did I would get a blade not a bucket.

the bulk of my snow removal is done with the snowblower so for the few places where the snow needs to be pushed or piled a bucket will suffice. But of course if you have a blade it would negate the consideration for the bucket to span your width.

I have both the 66 inch bucket that came from Kioti and a 60 inch that came from a previous Kubota. With SSQA I can switch back and forth. I can testify that the 60 inch will dig better. I don not have a toothbar on either, though I am sure that would help a lot. I don't have soil I just have rocks.:) Well there is SOME soil. I have a homemade bucket spade. and it digs ditches in our mostly rock, some soil like you would not believe. I have dug several. Sure it is not a backhoe, and is limited to a max of about 18 inches in depth, but it sure as heck will dig. If you dont believe it, let me have a go at your lawn, and I guarantee I can have a nice 18 inch trench down the middle of it in no time.:)

I have less than $20 total in my "bucket spade", I have a welder. :), and something of a scrap pile. Th bucket spade can be useful for picking pumpkins too.

Looks like a nice trenching tool you fabricated. I wonder if the spoils will just self load into the bucket if you keep pushing with the bucket at a 30 degree or so angle. The one thing I don't like about the bucket spade is that you have to move the tractor sideways (or in a Y maneuver) every time the spade is full to empty the spoils.

Another option might be to weld up a bucket spade that curved like a plow so the spoils would deposit on the side of the trench. Now that would be a really useful tool for placing water and electric lines.

I have always had to do the Y maneuver. Easy with a HST tranny. I hVe been able to dig out pretty good sized rocks with it. I dug a 200 foot ditch about a foot deep in a couple of hours as I recall.

200ft in a couple of hours is not bad at all.

Problem with the full size bucket spade (rather than narrow like yours) is that you end up with a significantly wider trench than needed for almost any water or electric line but have all the spoils and soil disruption to deal with. I've always liked the idea of using a subsoiler to lay cable but I've never had to do it.

I wanted to update you guys on the 60" bucket. It's no more heavy duty than the 66". It's built the same way and weighs a little bit less do to being more narrow. I'm still glad I got it though. In the little bit I've used it so far, I can see where it gives me a little more concentrated force on the hard pack rocky ground I'm using it on. Not having a heavier bucket is also an advantage since the KL2610 FEL doesn't have that high a lift capacity (about 1200 pounds lift to full hight and about 2200 pounds breakout force). I just got the Piranha tooth bar which I can't wait to install and try out.
