Kioti CK 30 (2008, gear drive, 415 hours)
Hi folks:

I have a 2008 CK30 gear drive that just started having a problem. I was running it when it just started losing power and stopped running. The engine would turn over, but would restart.

I let is sit for about 20 minutes (actually went and filled up the tank because it was low on fuel) and it started right back up.

It ran for about another 10 minutes and did the same thing....lost power and stalled.

Any ideas? I'm wondering if this is a fuel pump issue.

Have you cleaned the fuel filter. Is the fuel fresh?

Have you checked/cleaned your fuel filter? That's where I'd head first.

I replaced the fuel filter about 20 hours ago. And just filled the tank with regular diesel fuel just pumped from a station today.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Did you check and clean the vent on the fuel cap?...

It sure sounds like a fueling issue. One time i got some 5 gallon cans of contaminated diesel fuel that played havoc with my old jd870 until i drained tanks, drained fuel filter and got some fresh fuel from a truck stop. Problem went away. I guess the other fuel i got was contaminated with water or?.

No, I did not check the fuel cap

....I'll check on that tomorrow morning. Thanks.

BTW the tractor has just over 800 hours.

Doc, Sorry you already pulled the IP but this really acts like like a fuel feed issue. Sometimes there is a blockage at the bottom of the fuel tank where the fuel comes out. There is also a lift pump (aka feed pump) that delivers fuel to the IP at a few PSI. This is small pump has a diaphragm and check valves that can fail or get stuck. If you ran it out of fuel it could take a lot of cranking purge the air from the IP and lines. Fuel filters can last for years or plug in 5 minutes if you get dirty fuel. How does the fuel in the tank look? Certain microbes grow near the bottom of the tank and they can be a problem. I would start by pulling the hose at the bottom of the tank to be sure there is a good gravity feed there.

Thanks for the suggestions.

1) I could not move the IP rack pin at all when it was installed on the tractor. I tried through the oil port with my finger and a screw driver I also pulled the solenoid off and could not push the rack pin from there. So it was stuck.

2) I did remove it. Now the pin glides freely. Since it was off the tractor I did send it to thepumpguysc (along with the injectors).

3) Prior to removing the IP I had opened the fuel filter housing and dumped the fuel. I did not see any dirt or gunk in the filter (which is just 20 hours old) or in the housing. After cranking the engine the fuel filter housing filled with fuel so my guess is that the lift pump is functioning (at least a little).

4) I did turn the ignition key with the solenoid detached from the housing and it energizes and moves smartly between the two positions.

I usually fill the fuel tank when it gets down to around a quarter tank. I have been using regular "on road" diesel from the gas station an I always put Power Service Diesel Kleen in with the fuel. In the winter, I use the winter formula.

AT this point I guess I wait to see what the pumpguysc says about my pump. He should get it on Monday.

I guess I'll put it all back together and hope for the best!

I sure do appreciate all of the advice and collective wisdom of the forum members, such as yourself.

Sounds like you are on top of this. I'll be interested in the next update. I think you know this but normally when the tractor is off and the SS unpowered the strong spring in the SS forces the rack full aft (zero fuel injected) and the rack may feel stuck. But with the SS powered or removed the weak spring behind the IP gently pushes the rack forward until the rack pin rests against the governor lever. Under this condition the rack should move smoothly and easily. It sounds like you correctly tested that.
If the rack is jammed, turning the key on and off causes the SS to "slap" the rack pin which may move broken bits inside the IP. On my 2006 DK45S, repeating this allowed me to get the engine started long enough to remove the loader so I could work on the IP. The danger in this is a runaway engine so I was ready to kill it with the clutch.
