Seems to be the simple things that get us, good job.

Yeah, a marginal battery will behave like your's did. Thankfully you didn't go throwing parts at it prior to finding the actual problem. While you're at it make sure all connections from and to the battery are clean, no corrosion, etc., especially the ground to frame bolt. Coat all after they are shiny clean with a battery protectant spray, and use the treated felt washers under the battery post clamps and spray them too. This will ensure you have no battery loss of power issues for a long time.

Definately felt pads and corrosion spray on the battery terminals and I used copper antiseize on the ground to frame 7 years ago and still going strong. Glad you found out it was just a battery before you spent time and maybe money on other stuff. Thanks for the end result to your problem. We all learn from what others have gone through.

Well, I guess I jumped the gun telling everyone it was the battery. Although a new battery was needed it ended up being something else. A few days after telling everyone it was the battery the tractor didn't want to start again. I was back to square one. I finally decided to seek out the assistance of Rob Bassett at Twin State Tractor in Enfield, NH. He drove all the way to my place and checked a few things for me. His initial feeling was that it may be starving for fuel. He put more additive in the fuel and checked the fuel filter. He also checked to make sure the fuel pump was working properly and found that it was. He told me to try it again the next day and if it didn't start to give him a call. It didn't start but since I was heading to Enfield that day anyway I left earlier and stopped by to see him. He gave me a preheater controller and a relay to try. I swapped out the preheater controller and it started right up. It got to minus 15 degrees F on Tues so I started it up in the evening when I returned home from work. Given that the temperature never got above 10 degrees F that day it started up after using the glow plugs four times. The weather warmed up a bit on Wed so I let the tractor sit until Sat. On Sat I went to start it and it started without incident. I am convinced the preheater controller was the problem. Many thanks to everyone who responded to my post and offered assistance. It is reassuring to have so many people willing to help.
