So...goofing off for a few minutes working on truck's fuel pump, I took the UTV out for a spin after putting in some truck diesel, and, well, I broke my utv

Something went POP! after running down and back up a gully and I had no more drive power. The engine continued running fine. However none of the power was being applied to the drivetrain. Not in Forward (Hi or Low) and not in Reverse. Not in 4wd, not in 2wd.

CV joints front and rear appeared fine, no outward damage or shreddedness. I couldn't see anything under the carriage of course due to the entire belly being a skid plate. I did notice, the final time I shifted from Reverse back to Forward Hi I heard a slight slap/clunk of what I thought was a belt. But still nothing. I shut it down, gave a push in Neutral to a snice shady spot under the big Oak tree above the pond and left it. I'll recover it with the tractor here later and get it back to the shop area. I do not know this machine much at all except for the basic maintenance routine. I just haven't worked on one to learn yet. Looks like I'm gonna learn now. Can anyone point me to a general area I should begin my investigation based on the symptoms? I don't have any sort of full blown service manual, we bought the utv used a few years ago but I can look some more. I guess the upside to working on a utv is the parts are smaller and lighter than the truck 😌

I appreciate the help.

I downloaded a service manual and got some direction - the drive belt. I'm sure anyone who read my post and passed said 'duh'. I ordered a new Gates belt to get it on the way and the UTV dragged back to the shop with the tractor. I'll start tearing into things in the next few days. Manual says get the battery and exhaust out of the way and it's under the cover.

South Central Texas I see. The flashing and booming must have awaken you. Sounds like it past me already. Stay out of the hail.

I don't have a UTV but your diagnosis sounds spot on to me. (y)

It did and it was quite the show. I think the hail missed us, thank goodness. I love bad weather, I find it exciting, but I don't like the hail damage!...or any damage really.

Two weeks ago I got the voicemail announcement from the water department we were already in stage 2 water restrictions. The rain is much welcome. Yall stay safe out there.

Went out and WD40'd the exhaust bolts while it waits. Those don't look corroded or rough so hopefully removal is easy and the gaskets staying tact. I did also find a horrible hole and crack from the impact that blew out the cover near the front bottom. I suspect the slacking on the belt when I left off for the decline of the gully, then the rapid tension from acceleration on the other side did in the belt. HOPEFULLY only the belt and no hard parts. Won't know until I get in there but right now, guess I better look at getting a new cover too. I did find some mystery oil on top of the cover near the valve cover, not sure what that's about. The rest of the engine bay is dust covered.

The UTV is up and running. It was actually pleasant working on a machine bigger than a lawn mower but smaller that a diesel pickup. I haven't done that before.

After disassembly, I discovered the broken drive belt and damaged clutch cover. When the belt let go, it whacked the cover and blew an impressive hole in the front bottom corner of the case. I also discovered the clutch cover gasket was missing. It appears the last technician who worked on this didn't put it back. One thing that surprised me is the broken belt was new. And it broke in the thin part right in between the teeth. I noticed it was a different part number from the one I researched and I bought. I suspect this new belt broke for several factors - it may have been the wrong size, it may not have been broken in right, and of course the rapid slacked-to-tension cycle was the mechanism that ripped it.

I finally found and ordered a new clutch cover which was tougher than I thought. It's been a month and I'm still waiting, but I'm told by email they have the order. I stopped holding my breath and used duct tape to patch up the hole and put it all back together. If the new cover ships before I cancel it, I'll swap it out.

After everything was back together I took the utv out to break it in the belt. First impressions are I noticed that the belt engages sooner. I don't have to press the gas and sit and wait for it to catch before it moves the utv. The next thing I noticed is the engagement is firmer. When it grabs, it grabs.

I'm glad to have the utv back up and running, it's been missed.
